Essential Mac Software

Mac noob wonders what software he should download.

So far I've installed:

- Snitch (Monitors outgoing connections -- looks like I have to pay to activate)
- TextWrangler (Any better free or cheap editors out there?)
- Office 2004

Looking for:

- Something to replace WinSCP

Look on versiontracker for these:

Fugu - SFTP, SCP, SSH file transfers.
WordService - lowercase, UPPERCASE, Caps, Sort, etc. text in any application
Unicode Checker - Unicode Character research and conversion service
WordLookup - $ - front end to dictionaries in Arabic, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, etc.
Mellel - Word processing
Create - page layout
fink - install unix apps for the Mac from the shell with "fink list", "fink install"
vlc - video player
Audio Hijack - capture audio to file & perform effects from any application or other source
X11 - from OS installation disk - run X Windows applications

Get these command line tools with fink:
wget - command line downloading of entire websites
lynx - text based web browser
potrace - powerful autotrace, create vector graphics from bitmapped files

LittleSnitch is good. Register it. You can edit files right from remote directories with Fugu + Text Wrangler.

Open up a terminal session and type "scp blah blah blah"
