Interesting IDNs
Interesting IDNs
I suggest that we develop this thread to bring IDNs to life and add human interest stories. The idea being that we post interesting IDNs to this post and give a description of the IDN. This will help to develop interest in IDNs. So, please post interesting IDNs to this thread along with a description. I will start the ball rolling. *** Yeoju Hangeul Market is a market area in the city of Yeoju, South Korea. This market has a website with a Korean web address which is http://여주한글시장.한국 여주 = Yeoju 한글 = hangeul (frequently romanised as hangul), the alphabet for writing Korean 시장 = market 한국 = Korea There is a connection between Yeoju and Hangeul because the tomb of King Sejong, the originator of Hangeul, is located in Yeoju. I decided to perform a whois lookup of the aforementioned IDNs in this thread

In Brazil more businesses use idns, for example
www.tubarão.com - health club Notice that tubarao.com is for sale at Sedo but they just registered the idn and put the site on it. Good for them! |

I find the ExpertBio 엑스퍼트바이오 site interesting because
① it has 2 IDNs http://세포배양기.한국 cell culture.korea http://실리콘튜브.한국 silicone tube.korea ② The site actually displays itʼs IDNs in the web page footer. So many sites do not inform visitors that they have an IDN(s) André Schappo |

Upon further examination of the http://판촉물.한국 logo I realised that the small text embedded in the logo may well be another IDN for this site and it is indeed another IDN for this site.

Gopchang (also romanised as Gobchang) Story 곱창이야기 is a Korean restaurant chain which specialises in dishes containing various intestines and internal organs http://곱창이야기.한국
Until I found their IDN, I never knew there was such a thing! Here is a description of one of the dishes they serve. Assorted Intestines: The price-worthy choice for tasting all intestines -small intestine, entrail, large intestine, heart, tripe- at a time! 모듬곱창: 곱창, 막창, 대창, 염통을 한번에 맛 볼 수 있는 가격대비 최고 메뉴! Personally, these specialist dishes do not appeal to me, especially after watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT2KkBZvOLM …But… I publicly promise that if I ever have an opportunity I will go to a Gopchang Story restaurant and try one of their specialist intestines dishes. To my knowledge there is not a Gopchang Story restaurant here in England. André Schappo |
Re: Interesting IDNs
I have never associated the growing of Tangerines with South Korea. I have unconsciously associated the growing of tangerines with hotter countries closer to the equator. So, it came as a surprise to me when I discovered that Tangerines 감귤 are grown on a commercial scale on Jeju island 제주도, South Korea. Jeju island 제주도 is situated to the south of mainland South Korea and it is renowned for itʼs Tangerines.
I found a Tangerine growing farm on Jeju island which has IDNs for itʼs website, http://감귤.한국 (tangerine.korea) and http://비바리농원.한국 (Bibari farm.korea). Looking at the photos on their website one can see that they grow their Tangerines in greenhouses. Tangerines can also be grown outside on Jeju island and maybe this farm does also grow Tangerines outside. More info on Jeju Tangerines at http://blog.snackfever.com/2017/01/j...ean-tangerines André Schappo |

Garim Engineering 가림엔지니어링 is located in Siheung City 시흥시 South Korea. It produces and installs Pergolas, Benches, Sports facilities, Amusement facilities and various outdoor furniture. Their IDN is http://조경시설물.한국 (landscaping facilities.korea)
My favourite of their products is the colourful outdoor seating. It has the code JFB-101 and is at the bottom right of page http://조경시설물.한국/index.php?pgurl=etc/from08 I am impressed by the drone footage on the http://조경시설물.한국 landing page. The vegetable gardens in the video are so very tidy and well organised and they look totally weed free :) André Schappo |

Myeoncheon 면천 Dugyeonju 두견주 Preservation Society 보존회 http://면천두견주.한국
Myeoncheon Dugyeonju 면천두견주 is a tradition Korean alcoholic drink which is flavoured with Azalea flower petals. Their website is visually pleasing and has an immediate positive impact on first landing on their site. It certainly attracted my attention when I found it. They do display their IDN on their website but it is not obvious and it took me some time to notice it. Their IDN is the 2nd line of text in their banner at top left. Myeoncheon Dugyeonju is designated as South Korea Intangible Cultural Property 86-2. The bottles used for the drink are just so wonderfully stylish https://www.google.com/search?q=%EB%...A3%BC&tbm=isch Much more info about Myeoncheon Dugyeonju at https://koreatourinformation.com/blo...ol-korean-life André Schappo |

Postech 포스텍: Pohang University of Science and Technology 포항공과대학교 has two IDNs, namely, http://포항공과대학교.한국 and http://포항공대.한국 The difference between the two is that the first has university in full 대학교, the second uses a common abbreviation for university which is 대.
After some experimentation I discovered that their website is language is language adaptive. If the "preferred language for displaying pages" is set to Korean then the website text is Korean. If the "preferred language for displaying pages" is set to any non Korean language then the website text will be English. Actually, I have only tested with the languages: Korean, English, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Tibetan and Thai. I am assuming that English will be the default for text with every non Korean language setting. The "preferred language for displaying pages" can be set by the user in the browser preferences. One can have a priority list of preferred languages. This is passed from the browser to the server via the http header. A good server will do something with this info. Most servers ignore it. Here is a accept-language list from my Firefox ko,en;q=0.91,ko-KP;q=0.82,ko-KR;q=0.73,ru;q=0.64,ar;q=0.55,zh;q=0.45,ja;q=0.36,th;q=0.27,bo;q=0.18,en-GB;q=0.09. ko=Korean and is the most preferred and it results in http://포항공과대학교.한국 displaying Korean text. The accept-language list bo,en;q=0.91,ko;q=0.82,ko-KP;q=0.73,ko-KR;q=0.64,ru;q=0.55,ar;q=0.45,zh;q=0.36,ja;q=0.27,th;q=0.18,en-GB;q=0.09, where bo = Tibetan, will result in http://포항공과대학교.한국 displaying English text. You can view your browser accept-language list (actually Safari only sends a single language code) that is sent to the server by visiting http://ericgiguere.com/tools/http-header-viewer.html André Schappo |
