CNNIC Launches Chinese Domain Names For Government Departments

Quote:
June 12, 2006 Chinese domain name registration institution China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has launched a special service for government departments to register their own Chinese-language domain names.

The service, Government Bodies and Undertaking Departments Domain Name Registration Network, will be responsible for handling the application of Chinese domain names from government departments. So far, it has initiated Chinese domain names for 50 government departments including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Personnel.

CNNIC says already more than 5000 government bodies and provincial departments have submitted applications for registering Chinese-language domain names with the service.

CNNIC says it will take measures to preserve and protect the names of these government departments.

It is not clear whether these domains are being created at the top level or for the myriad of second level extensions that already exist.

It would seem like very good news, but there may still be a gap between the provision of the service and actual implementation of IDN Urls by government departments, but it will certainly get interesting is this starts to happen fairly quickly.

This means names like 外交部.cn, 国防部.cn, etc, will be confiscated.

Well, this is always a heightened risk with ccTLDs as although in many cases they may be justified, some decisions are likely to seem a bit arbituary.

Re: CNNIC Launches Chinese Domain Names For Government Departments

Yes, quite inevitable, if you could have register 中国.cn or 中国.中国 then, i'm sure someone used to own 北京.cn or 北京.中国 before they took it and used it as the website for the beijing municipal government. It's quite certain that the Chinese government is pushing it's departments to adopt IDN. That is the first and also pioneering step.

One should avoid trademarks and anything related to government, political figures, names of places, historical landmarks, and buildings for .cn.

There's no idn.idn that .com can convert to that can beat .中国....especially when .公司 is taken as well. I can't even think of a substitution that is even only 20% as good as either of them - if you can read Chinese, you'll know what i am talking about.

Some of the ironies of investing in chinese idns.
