Does this mean yahoo? ヤフー

ヤフー ?

I'm confused... as I went to www.ヤフー.com and it shows that it is a trademark for arms (guns etc)?

Re: Does this mean yahoo? ヤフー

It seems to be Hebrew...

What does the word "Yahoo" mean in Hebrew?

Quote:
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Fuentes,

The Hebrew word Yahoo (or Yahu) is a name of G-d. It is commonly found at the end of people's names. It represents a Divine attribute added to the name. For example, Yeshayahu (Isaiah) means "G-d's redemption," Yirmiyahu (Jeremiah) means "Fear of G-d."

I sometimes wonder if the internet company Yahoo! became such a major success simply because G-d likes the name they chose!

A few examples:

パン French
アルバイト German
カバン Dutch

Hebrew terms in Japanese:

ミシュネー・トーラー (מִשְׁנֵה תּוֹרָה Mishneh Torah)
トーラー (Torah, תורה)
タルムード (Talmud, תלמוד )
「ヤッホー」とはヘブライ語の「ヤハウェ」がなまったもの、つまり神の名前だったんだよ!

Unfortunately, the domain was created in 2000, which is a few years after Yahoo established in Japan (1996), so I'm not sure how this Israeli Trademark will hold up in WIPO Arbitration.

Re: Does this mean yahoo? ヤフー

I'm sorry if I was unclear. It is the Yahoo (the company) in Japanese.

I was answering the question of what's going on with the trademark for guns and ammunition. That was my guess as to what the registrant was thinking when he registered Yahoo's company name. Does anyone read Hebrew? If so, can you have a look and see if there is actually an Israeli weapons company using the Hebrew equivalent of "yahoo" as a trade name?

It's also interesting to note that the main page of Yahoo Japan currently uses the "romaji" English form of Yahoo exclusively. ヤフー is not used on the page at all. This is a good illustration of the point I was making in another thread about mixing of "romaji" English letters within Japanese text.
