.net taken but not .com??

ok this is bizarre.

I appear to have found two Chinese .com domains that are free. Yet the .net are taken. And these are HUGE terms I kid you not.

Am I missing something here?

Surely these should have been reg'd a long time ago.

Are there some reserved names or characters or something?

I know there is that weird simplified to traditional thing that can stop you registering any TLD, but in this case, the .nets are already reg'd. Surely I can grab the .coms?

Re: .net taken but not .com??

Have you bought them yet?

If using Domainsite often the name will show as being available, but if you try and reg it, and error will occur not letting you register the name.

If i were you i would try and register them. maybe you got lucky

Re: .net taken but not .com??

oh well i tried.

xn--tqqp71j.com

i knew it was too good to be true!

but why allow the .net and not the .com if it is down to "chances are the IDN you attempted to register was a variant of an IDN already registered. This usually means that the domain name contains native characters in one language that can be mapped to those of another"

Exactly..

But the great thing for me is. Some people get tired of trying to register it, so they just stop trying, and I catch the .coms with .nets taken since 2000.

Re: .net taken but not .com??

There are two written languages in Chinese - Simplified (used in mainland China) and Traditional (used in Taiwan and Hong Kong). Sometimes these two forms are the same but other times they are not. If a Simplified Chinese domain is registered then the Traditional Chinese variant of that same domain is blocked (and vice versa). However, the blocked version will APPEAR to be avialable when checked at a registrar. The block is usually identified when the registrar submits the order.

You can check both versions at mdbg.net. Check both versions for future registrations. If one is taken, usually, USUALLY, the other one is blocked. There are also some cases where there is a Simplified, Traditional, and Japanese variant.

Good luck.

Re: .net taken but not .com??

This name is 体育 --> physical culture / physical training / sports

Why you cant register it is because the Traditional version has already been registered
體育 is the Traditional version

Domainsite will show it as available but only when it is queried at the registry will it be denied.

PITA but never mind....

Dynadot I think will let you know if its been taken..

Opps -- Snap...:p

Re: .net taken but not .com??

Hi Rolf, this is the ultimate "shows open" heartbreaker so I thought I would point it out.

xn--1lq90i.com 北京.com Beijing.com

I don't think anyone mentioned it, but some Japanese are the same as Chinese and will not register.

Here's one in Japanese 法律事務所.com (legal office, JP OVT 68150) thats also the exact same as Traditional Chinese
but won't register, probably because the Simplified Chinese version is taken.

Re: .net taken but not .com??

体育 is available in .jp but with 5000 ovt it is a little too low for my blood. But if anyone wants it, it is a good domain name.

Re: .net taken but not .com??

It depends ... For example Rubber Duck has a simplified .com and the .net yet I was able to register the .net in traditional... Why? Who knows...Mistake at the registry level? Hard to say

There are other cases of the same senario with .com (I think)
