Domains with Space

OK. Anyone know HOW to register a domain name with a space? Or is this guy off the wall?!? In fact, I'd like to own SPACE.com myself. It's probably the most typed word in all languages combined.

Re: Domains with Space
It has never been possible to include a blank space in a domain name. Or, would you like to show me one?

What he appears to be saying is that it would have been possible to let us have domains with spaces but they just didn't.

Right, except he goes on to say "OR NOBODY DOES IT REGULARLY" which implies that it is done on occasion, but not on a regular basis; or, that it HAS BEEN DONE irregularly, on an ad hoc basis.
Who is this guy? I need to give him an earfull.

I think he is alluding to the fact that some obscure non-ICANN system may have used it once or twice just to show that they could.

Re: Domains with Space
And why not have spaces? We have spaces in file names now on modern operating systems.

Re: Domains with Space
Who knows...
Though if you add x number of spaces to the alphabet, and an extra 2, one for at the beginning and one for at the end of all 3 letter combos there would be [how many??] permutations instead of 17,576
[space]aaa.com
a[space]aa.com
aa[space]a.com
aaa[space].com
etc etc
Then, what if you could add two or three or ten spaces?

I think it would require a change to the DNS over and above that required to implement DNAME. Basically he doesn't want to do it, and clearly believes it will cause problems. Whether he is justified, I couldn't say.

Re: Domains with Space
RFCs which define protocols for domain usage and which go back at least to the mid 1980s prohibit the use of spaces in domain names (along with ampersands, beginning hyphens, etc.). It has been ever thus. If you google the issue with a bit of patience I'm sure you can find the most up-to-date RFC that controls this issue.

That is correct but perhaps it not set in stone. Effectively, it is with ICANN's power to make changes to these protocols if necessary, but I think they would have to percieve a real need, which clearly they don't. Other have allowed alternatives to the dot characters which is clearly outside these protocols. It isn't, however, exactly running on what most of us understand to be the Internet.

Re: Domains with Space
This person is clearly talking through a hole in their head, with little real technical knowledge of the way the DNS has and does operate.
We could add spaces, simply by opening up punycode to allow them, punycode allows the addition of anything to a domain name EXCEPT a domain name that starts with "xn--" which is the label that denotes the domain is encoded in punycode.
The only think stopping the use of spaces, % $ & # @ ! etc is that they've been forbidden in the punycode spec.
It's sort of racism against dollar currencies, because the British, among others, get to use their currency indicator in domains names but S users don't.
@ is probably unusable actually, along with ! (bang paths)

Just the same kind of racism that doesn't let Cyrillic or Thai users can't register mixed+Latin domains, while the Japanese can.

Re: Domains with Space
It's not possible at all to have a space in a domain name.
Hyphens are looked at by Search Engines as a space - for instance Text-Book.com essentially is looked at as "text book" versus TextBook.com.
For SEO using hyphens in place of a space has many many many advantages. This may have been what he was talking about.

Can they still? We seem to have lost the ability to reg latin+symbol recently. Maybe they banned all mixed-code IDN?
Anyone reged a mixed in the last couple of days?
Just did a mixed latin=japanese and it worked fine.
Has anyone regged a pure symbol domain recently? Maybe they really HAVE fixed the symbol blocking?
