PIR Releases Principles for the Foundation of Top Level IDNs

ICANN posted and interesting document from the Public Interest Registry (registry for .org) RE "Principles for the Foundation of Top Level IDNs".

The PIR makes a very strong case that current registries (the various entities behind .com, .net, .org, .uk, .fr, etc.) should own the rights to foreign translations of said TLD...it doesn't get into the New Space vs. DName issue, but clearly DName offers a more elegant solution in terms of policy (if you accept the merits of PIR's argument).

I think they are referring to "globally recognized brands". These are the words used in the document.
Most likely meaning Sony, Toshiba, CocaCola, Samsung, IBM etc. etc.

Yes, ICANN have managed to create enourmous confusion, due to their attempt, after several years of Wanton neglect, to have as wide a policy debate as possible. They are frankly wasting time debating options that have never been on the table. It is quite clear to every half appraised bystander what they are going to have to do. I don't know how long the executive is going to give them the luxury of talking absolute bullshit, but my guess is that they will have to take a cold dose of reality fairly soon.
