Re: Academics Break Down Great Firewall of China

"Clayton, speaking at the Sixth Workshop on Privacy Enhancing Technologies in Cambridge last week, said that the researchers had reported their findings to the Chinese Computer Emergency Response Team."

Ironically, they are helping to improve the "Great Firewall" better

This great firewall, the biggest damage comes not from censorship, but the frustratingly slow access to websites outside of China. Yes, people are using 3MBps DSLs, but to access an overseas forum like IDNF is like using a 14.4K dialup modem.

Yes, it is a bit like the bad old days when Customs Officers used to scrutinize every item that came in and out the Country. The growth in Air Traffic eventually meant that this was no longer practicable. Clearly there is a deep sense of paranoia about information in China, but ultimately they will have to accept that information flow and vibrant economies cannot be mutually exclusive. You simply cannot get the Chinese Economy to where it needs to go with such much restriction on the flow of information.

Not sure about that! I think they are signally that it would only take a short communication with a bit more detail to a dissident group and the Firewall could be used to paralize the Chinese Internet. By its very nature the Firewall is a two edged sword. I think all they are in fact doing is pointing out how sharp that second edge could be. It may well be that efforts to prevent this sort of attack would be fighting a loosing battle against motivated hackers, who already exist. At the moment those hackers have been primarily interested in finding and exploiting small holes. What these guys are showing is that it is a defence mechanism that can be used as a very effective weapons system on the defender. It is a bit like Al Quaeda using software to launch a Minuteman attach on New York. If that were a credible threat then you would have to decommission the Minutemen.
