I think Google Trends is a plus selling point, but nevertheless. shouldn't be used to dictate whether a domain has value.

but use Chinese as an example... there's no overture to use, and if google trends says "not enough data to show results" does this mean NO GOOD?

It really depends on Google's market share in the given language. If Google doesn't have any penetration in a certain market then having no Google trends is expected.

I went through some of my chinese names with Google Trends, many average names show no data, so Google trends can only show data for top chinese names.

Even "spam mail" is a borderline case - google.com/trends?q=%E5%9E%83%E5%9C%BE%E9%82%AE%E4%BB%B6&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

Does someone know how can you "translate" the trends graph to some kind of a number figure in the 1000s,millions etc?

no you can't YET.

maybe later - this tool is only a beta.

the best you can do is benchmark it against other words. A lot of us here have "good" "better" "best" words that we use in each language as a benchmark.

(to compare two words, just seperate them with a comma in google trends)

It's very clear to me Google have cleverly engineered this tool so it *doesn't* display numbers. The reason? To reduce the likelihood of the tool being hammered to death by infobots, which OVT suffers from.

No you won't be seeing numbers added in the near future, not unless Google start charging for it :p

If it's a commercial term & it shows up by itself in Google Trends no matter the language I'd recommend grabbing it.
There are plenty of good terms that don't show up themselves though.
2 word terms often don't show up in many languages.

Yes, it's very important to add a second word to benchmark the first. It doesn't take that much traffic for a term to appear on Google Trends, so without a known (or guessable) reference point it's a meaningless graph.

For example, everyone is talking about Youtube (there are thousands of articles about it and it's all over the blogs) yet in reality it's much much less known than Myspace is...
