What would be great if we could form a credible committee to reach out to these companies, educate them and let them understand what IDNs are (Telephone and generic letters) and what stage they are at and ultimately hold public auctions for some generic names to get the fever running... personally I don't think its that big a task.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
The first thing we need is full browser support.
The second thing we need is ICANN to avoid making confusing and damaging public statements and focus their energies on what they should be doing. If anyone serious believes that ICANN are capable of constructing a fully Unicode Root, then they have been sniffing too much white powder!
The third thing we need is little more patience. Two months and people will be tearing your arms and legs off to get at your portfolio.
