Re: Funny, Good or Sad ? This New Trend

Why do people register these? Do they expect that a big company like Microsoft will not sue them to get the name and try to prove that they registered it in bad faith? Do they register hoping to cash in quickly on a few dollars in PPC and then give in to Microsoft?

The only ones that will have TM infringment are zunes.cc and zunes.de

Many video game sites have always used the video game system in their domain...

PS2cheats.com etc
These sites get hundreds of thousands of pageviews/month and are still here.

Sometimes the postivie effects of having your fans build sites about your product (with the brand name in the domain) is better than the negative effects of going after them with litigation.

Especially when your competitors allow it.

Let them throw money away. It is just a project code name, not the final product name. How many people are holding "longhorn" domains intending to cash in on what is now named Vista.

I don't necessarily agree with this, but franchises and dealerships etc have always used names of suppliers marks. Suppliers will only normally object if this threatens rather than enhances their business. If Apple acquired any of these, Microsoft would soon spit their dummy out.

The "funny" part is you call this a "new trend". Registering domains based on new products / services / films etc is the oldest oldest trick in the domain speculation book. Where have you been the last 8 years?

Re: Funny, Good or Sad ? This New Trend

What will be sad is when the Zune's name is changed, as this may not be the final name of the product.

I guess then, all the folks who speculate heavily on names such as this will be left holding thier wii.

Ah ok, but anyway, the concept of regging "new things" is as old as domain speculation itself.

Don't forget, domains only cost $7. So you really aren't gambling a lot by regging these names. If Microsoft stick with the name, the speculators might make thousands of dollars before Msoft get round to UDRPing them, if they ever do ....
