HELL NO for Indian IDNs

There is little doubt that you have a very good generic co.in portfolio "keyword" wise. Good work! However, the worrisome part is that even with such great keyword domains and with "English" internet at the helm in India today these domains still receive pretty low traffic proportionally (from your stats). Where do you expect future traffic growth to come from on these domains - new English speakers in India (I thought they were already online)? Contrastingly, I imagine that these keywords in .com would easily be receiving traffic in excess of 100000 per month. However, you have taken a very good decision to develop them.

No, I was just trying to see how overture results correlated with the results of ranking.com. Yes, I know Overtune only tracks Yahoo traffic, still its entries give a fair idea about the trafic in general. Strangely, it shows zero entry for gov.co.in even with that "big" traffic.

So the ranking will anyway get skewed.

I don't understand why U.S. news sites never seem to paint the right picture about India. Half of them state more ppl are getting online everyday. Other articles state that India is behind and most ppl don't have a computer. Which is it?.

My sense is that those who paint a rosy picture are perhaps talking about the future. For anything to be a success, you have to first reach a critical mass, after which its all exponential auto-pilot. I don't think India has attained that yet, but sure to reach in next 5 years. "Computer/broadband must enter homes" ..

I am not undermining the importance of IDN but I am defending the place for .in & .co.in in Indian context.


My guess is most Indians do not randomly go to any Indian Sites. They go to specific sites mostly by word of mouth or based on advertisement or by typo error (evident from the traffic surge I receive on Osmania the day results are announced).
(Its a different story at Cyber cafes)
So even with IDN's it will have to be developed or indexed well to get any decent traffic.

PPC in general is dying off - this is not an Indian problem. Witness people on all the forums complaining about endless $0.02 clicks.

I have around 50/60 developed .in and .co.in names now and get anywhere from 5 cents to $1 clicks.

Getting well-ranked in the Indian versions of Google and Yahoo is roughly, oh lets say.... 100 times easier than acheiving a similar feet in .com versions of the search engines.

This is a key question and the truth is no one knows whether type-in traffic will develop until it does. If I made a guess, I would say that most americans do not randomly go to any American sites either. I would guess that they go to specific sites by word of mouth or based on ads or typos. And yet, my guess is completely, completely WRONG. Type-in traffic is an amazing phenomenon. The psychology of it has not been rigorously undertaken I am sure but there it is - American people just typing-in. So I may be wrong but I'm placing my money on type-in traffic materializing in the next couple of years.

Yeah definitely type-in traffic will be huge in the coming years as the internet is booming and visiting sites will be a necessity for many. Just like people have to remember addresses and phone numbers they'll also have to remember various sites for their use and accessibility.
