Are you registering typos?
Many times russians forget to switch their keybords into English language when entering a domain into their browsers ... I remember myself doing that many times a day.
Those who do, get to "зщктщюкг" instead of porno.ru, and "ьз3юкг" instead of mp3.ru, and since we have .com extension added to any cyrillic name automatically*, people are automatically transfered to зщктщюкг.com and ьз3юкг.com
Those names get traffic today, and will get more traffic when all browsers add .com extension to any cyrillic term entered.
Do you register such names and do they have any value today?
*Opera browser.

Re: Are you registering typos?
i have a few,
no opinion, yes ,they bring traffic - thats all i know of them at this point
and i wouldnt call them typo as typo is really i.e mortage rather then mortgage
(mortage.com sold for 240k btw)
and these are "fayky" as you call them in your forum (Fake)

Woud you agree if I said that this "fake" domains have more value at this very moent than any other domain with meaning? Don;t you think that traffic is all you need from any domain?

Re: Are you registering typos?
Not at all.
i.e if one owns ebay.com in "fake" russian
the way i see it u have 2 options
1. redirect to an ebay like site - untill ebay is knocking (not sure they can but i do not underestimate that they can) (if they cant do nothing great...the value grows)
2. redirect to completly diffrent site and then users leave immediately unless its VERY eye catching as they are looking for ebay/brand and not for i.e loans or another generic
The only other advantage can be considered a "low" branding tactic...so u redirect to one of your sites and people get to know u "by accident" (i dont know how much users will appriciate that you "made" them come and see your site)
As for i.e Generic.com , where it's worth will only grow and u can build on it, not have it knowing u might only have it for a few more days/weeks/months etc...and all other advantages obviously that come with a regular domain
P.S Eyeballs=$ online...thats true...but still..all above applies

Re: Are you registering typos?
Which is better:
1) Customer wants to visit Brand Name site. Sees your site, and goes away, annoyed that Brand Name site did not show up.
Sure, you will get some % of click through and can make some money.
Domain can not be resold to an end user as it has only domainer value, not commercial value.
2) Customer wants Product. See your generic Product site. Clicks on links to Product.
This is the ideal situation domainers want to find themselves in.
Domain can be resold easily.

There are way more resellers than end users.
If such name generates steady daily traffic that increases day by day, than NameDrive will pay you for whatever domain generates in up to 96 months, isn't that better than generic "dot com" with zero traffic that you have to hold on to for few years until someone offers you few thousand dollars for it?
Isn't it better to have money today and invest them, so you can get high profits tomorrow, than have money tomorrow?

Of course you can make money. But you can't advertise a typo domain on TV. The domain cars.com can be advertised on TV in any language. That is what I mean by commercial value to end users.
Everyone has a different strategy. I'd rather have a million in 5 years, rather than $10,000 today.

Re: Are you registering typos?
Tell this to the seller of ASCII news.com and download.com which sold them for appx 20k each to cnet (if he didnt kill himself yet)*
*The seller of news.com and download.com is alive and well to the best of my knoweldge (but u get the point)
Theres always from the other hand, propety can always lose value as well (though very unlikely with domains)
waterfront property-always expensive for limited availability.
domain-theres no limited availability-THERES ONLY 1.

Then how come you missed so many good ones?
porno.ru, mp3.ru, rbk.ru, km.ru and many more that are on top in all rating services.

The sarcasm was wasted wasn't it?
I meant, I have many Russian typos, that I didn't mean to get.

Is that a serious question?
Maybe because I don't read/write Russian; the Yandex tool is crap and parses phrases, and the Russian language is bizarre to me with all these useless "of...." variants of words that are useless on their own.

Re: Are you registering typos?
All you needed to do is to ask for some help from natives.

there wern't that many natives around in February, and the competition going for Russian was intense. My strategy was to carpet-bomb the language; sure I'll pick up some typos, but I won more times than I lost.

Re: Are you registering typos?
One misconceptions here is that the original brand owner probably has no realistic claim over such Fake Domains unless they have specifically registered them separately as TMs. Typos are covered because they are considered to be visually confusing. These Fake domains generally won't fall into that category.

Re: Are you registering typos?
When searching for "Anecdote" I picked up (not the main term) анегдоты - but 225k google.ru pages with many using this in title.
http://www.google.ru/search?hl=ru&q=...%D1%8B+%22&lr=
Will this by chance be typed in?
And also, is this the spelling that people use in "some" parts of Russia?

This term has a mistake in its body. It is a not a dictionary word. It is not slang, but may be considered as such.
Simply, it is a very bad mistake that some uneducated people make, and since they are dumb they will generate nice traffic and CTR
