Yes, they seem to have introduced IDN seemlessly enough. Doesn't appear as though there is much going on in the way of local branding but perhaps that will come once IE 7.0 has been released. There would not be much point pushing URLs that won't yet resolve.

If the rest of the Worlds big corporates are as forward thinking as IKEA then we would be home and dry! Perhaps it is an indication that Europe will leave the US in the starting blocks for once!

hats off to Ikea.

イケア resolves to .com, .net and .JP

I think they just all mask forward to the same global site - but 10/10 for forward thinking.

Yes, I wonder how many other large companies are going to be patted on the back in coming weeks.

Of course if you are a large US corporate and think that all your International Branding should be in Latin Characters to cement one integral global brand, then none of the above applies anyway. Just think how much damage IKEA is doing to their global brand by having so many confusing and unfamiliar representations.:p

Yes, it is interesting to look back and who said what. I remember Edwin trashing URL Forwarding as a feasible strategy for the implementation of IDN. It is, ,however, clearly an easy option and one many will adopted, if only as a provisional measure.

Even people like ROM who have kept bashing IDNs on namepros.com have stopped posting in the IDN section since he saw your traffic stats

Yes, it is a little Salvador Dali, but it would be great if we could get all of those ASCII domainers on a Mountain somewhere for a group photo! Trouble is most of them have their heads so far up their arses, we wouldn't be able to work out who was who!

IE 7.0 does not display Unicode, unless you Allow the particular language involved to be displayed, you simply see the Punycode instead. This system, however, prevented mix script domains to be properly displayed, even though many of them are legitimate. IE 7 will now display legitimate combinations, if each of the included languages is Allowed by the user.

Re: Changes to IDN in IE7 to now allow mixing of scripts

The real opportunities are not for the big corporations but for the smart domainers like the folk reading this. How many languages incorporate english for new technology words? Also useful I think for common acronyms, something like DVDsales.com where "sales" is in language of your choice.

Except apparently for cyrillic for some reason??

I believe it is except for cyrillic for the high simularity in the characters

у к е н х о р а в с м т <-- all cyrillic

Re: Changes to IDN in IE7 to now allow mixing of scripts

cyrillic has characters (called homographs or homoglyphs) that look like ascii characters so they don't allow the mix of ascii and cyrillic to resolve as unicode - this is done to prevent homograph or spoofing attacks

also, the new mixing rules only apply to the mix of ascii and certain scripts

Re: Changes to IDN in IE7 to now allow mixing of scripts

Let's just hope that someone realizes that Japanese & English mixed should be allowed by default.
