Russian IDNs

Hey everyone. Im looking for advice. A member commented once about russian idns saying that the .net translates to "no" in russia. Is this widely known that russians translate the extenstion as well as the IDN itself? I've never heard of this. I've found many great russian IDN.nets and I have held off on regging them. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Russian IDNs

Yes, I do speak Russian, though not as fluent as I would like. Does this really have anything to do with the question?

Re: Russian IDNs

ill use the example of alzheimer (you know, when people FORGET what they say and do...even simple tasks)

альцгеймер.com = alzheimer.com
альцгеймер.net = alzheimer.net

Net=no in russian

so some say can be thought of like in this example as no alzheimer

even though imo it would not in anyway be a negative to russian idn.net
as there are many working russian sites using the .net extension (net for network but most end users think it stands for interNET and in russian you also say internet..like any other language in the world probably?)

Thank you 261275. I appreciate the comment. I was thinking the same thing. I have come across several russian IDN.net's that are available and i wasn't sure since most people on this forum take what a single member says as the straight up facts. I, personally, have never seen a russian translate .net to "no", but then again, I've never asked.

Just to be 100% clear, it's not as simple as just adding .net to make a Russian idn into something.no. As we all know, Russian is a bit complex, so

альцгеймер.net = alzheimer.net is a domain on its own, but in Russian these two words "альцгеймер net" together do not mean "no alzheimer". In order to make it sound "no alzheimer", the first word "альцгеймер" needs be changed to "альцгеймера". This way, it's OK to say "альцгеймера net".

Again, this is not a simple issue and I am afraid can not be tought by just a few lessons due to multiple and sometimes difficult to even a native speaker "language rules" in Russian.

Re: Russian IDNs

A good example of a domain name where the extention IS used:
www.anekdotov.net

It is a populare web site. "Anekdotov net" ("анекдотов нет") is correct russian and can be translated as "there are no jokes".
By the way, the web site is devoted to jokes, fun and entertainment.

I have held off on regging good russian DOT NET's too because of the negation.
This is my personal opinion.
