Do-it-Yourself dname

1. A simple plugin to enable .公司 -> .com, .ком -> .com, etc. mapping.

2. Hound MS and Mozilla to enable automatic ком -> com resolution in the browser.

3. On every IDN website, make it clear that in IE, Firefox, Netscape, you should type the domain and press [CTL]-[ENTER]. A lot of people still don't know that you can do this.

I know there are some programmers on here. Let's do it.
Perhaps it is not that difficult to technically mimic DNAME with a Client side solution, but this is rather forgetting that DNAME is also a political process. Nobody has decided on what Aliases will be allowed for TLDs in the various languages. Such decisions are certainly not within the remit of domain forums.

I think this proposal is only likely to cause further confusion to an already confused World and therefore be detrimental to the cause of IDN.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

I don't seem to recall any real political issues in this other than a lack of will to implement.

What political issues are you aware of?

A lot of websites advertise themselves as the IDN.IDN even though they are NOT.

Now, a lot of IDN websites are going to advertise themselves as IDN.IDN, even though they are NOT (yet).

This creates confusion for the new user, who is unaware that there isn't any .ком yet, for example.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

It's just the little matter of solving all the squabbles of who gets what. None of that has been done. Indeed, the ground rules of how that will be done haven't even been decided yet.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

The mapping issue is one where not everyone agrees currently.
I know many worldwide will be happy with IDN.EXT
That's the main hurdle for most.

The current mapping options in certain languages don't actually sound good to some.

I like com because it doesn't say company
For the market I invest in
.会社 Kaisha (company) doesn't really sound cool to me
.日本 bit better than kaisha

Still not sure what net will be.

For Russian you can use KOM which might sound fine.
I would also worry about you guys hiring programmers to change something & then ICANN releases something making the programming incompatible.

I'm sure you've thought about it Blast but there would be plenty of issues to resolve.
Good luck if you attempt it.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

China CNNIC has created .公司 and .网络 domains. This is the biggest problem for Chinese IDN.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

Yep. Let's not have any more errant plug-in's out there screwing things up in the future.

Just be patient. DNAME will come.

And the jury is certainly not out on who gets what OR who decides who gets what.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

The thing is that CNNIC can easily block idn name space for their own benifit. We are facing a spilited internet.

They could block anaything they want, exept they probably need the business of Chinese who don't live on the mainland.

This suggests that ICANN needs to insert a presure on the Chinese government to force CNNIC to abadon the .公司 and .网络 domains. CNNIC only cares about their own business (.公司 and .网络 domains) which clearly conflicts with the Chinese national benifits at large.

They would greatly impede their ability to do business around the world if they try to block .com or .net. They may add more extensions, but a good thousands of distributors of products made in China now hyperlink 'their' catalogs straight to the (ascii url) Chinese websites so the product lists and descriptions are the most upto date and current. Just a small example.

Re: Do-it-Yourself dname

Some dudes have done that before for ascii (get any domain you want) and it was free. They were trashed by everyone and the plug-in considered spyware!

Any system that requires a plug-in to function is doomed to failure. It's as simple as that. Forget it.
