ICANN approves .asia TLD for Asia-Pacific

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15333681/

Highlights:

"A key oversight agency has approved a ".asia" domain for Internet addresses, supplementing suffixes available for individual countries, such as ".cn" for China and ".jp" for Japan. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers earlier approved ".eu" for the European Union.

Made up of groups that run domain names for China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and other countries, the DotAsia Organization Ltd. plans to explore permitting domain names in Asian languages under ".asia." ICANN also has been exploring allowing suffixes in other languages, too, though that will take time and is unaffected by Wednesday's decision on ".asia."

inalizing the contract between ICANN and DotAsia could take weeks. Registrations for English-language names is not expected for another six to nine months. Prices will vary, and trademark holders will get the first picks.

Backers of ".asia" believe Asian businesses will want a separate identity, particularly as they expand beyond their own countries and find their country-specific names limiting for a regional market. Individuals and groups will be eligible as well"

Of course those of us with the religion may well ask, why not brand your company around an IDN.com domain rather than a .asia domain!

Just another thing to keep the ASCII domainers busy.

Why the discrimintation?

Europe gets the nice and short .eu and Asia gets the long .asia?

Asia is short enough and definitely sounds better than As, which does sound like "ass" by the way. So I think they made the right decision. I am not sure if it will fly as well as the eu though. The Asian market is not as well integrated as the EU. There goes another reason the abbreviation EU is commonly known. Asia is not commonly known by any other abbreviation.

Re: ICANN approves .asia TLD for Asia-Pacific

Even .IDN is problematic because of deunification of characters:

亞 Chinese
亚 Simplified PRC
亜 Japanese

亞洲 Chinese
亚洲 Simplified PRC
東亜 -> アジア Japanese
