Re: Symbol domains

Well, the greater concern is how long this is allowed? I believed the archieve here somewhere was talking about the ending the usage of such names.

Out of curiousity..how is it a Concern?

the only reason it might be considered a concern would be if you wanted to buy any and thought they are cancelling them?

Good news (if correct) to symbol domains owners

Re: Symbol domains

In the IAB report it appears they recommend to eliminate non language characters and hyphens.

Yea, i'm afraid of the ones that i'm holding.

as quoted for easy reading,

Quote:
"Permissible code points will not include: (a) line symbol-drawing
characters (as those in the Unicode Box Drawing block), (b) symbols
and icons that are neither alphanumeric nor ideographic language
characters, such as typographic and pictographic dingbats, (c)
characters with well-established functions as protocol elements, (d)
punctuation marks used solely to indicate the structure of
sentences."

There are two levels we're talking about here.

One is "allowed" as in "allowed to register" - which is a function of either the "nameprep" software that registrars must pass all IDN's through during the registration process, or the secret squrrel validation that the Registry itself does afterwards. (Plus any change of policy that may cause names to be deleted or not able to be renewed)

The other is browser level - whether to display (in the navigation bar) certain IDN domain names in punycode rather than converting to Unicode - a phishing/security problem. That's a decision made by the browser software writer.

Since certain script mixes can no longer be registered (ascii/cyrillic and ascii/greek)? it will be less of a problem going forward. The only lingering ones will be pure cyrillic that look like ascii and pure ascii that look like cyrillic, and I think it's up to the companies involved to secure the alternatives (which they might possibly do via UDRP) to close that loophole.
