To get more users to use dot jps Registries in Japan lowers prices

Domain registry sites in Japan have started to drop prices on dot jps

So now there's quite a few registries that are regging IDN.jp for less than $10.

They haven't dropped prices for ASCII.jp just IDN.jp

I fully expect to see more IDN sites this year.

Any promotions, or campaigns in China, or other countries?


I believe progression is going to go like this.

1. Large companies are going to use mediocre IDNs to make campaign sites, like they are doing now.
2. Bloggers in Japan will use IDNs more for their blogs. Young people will get used to IDNs more this way.
3. Younger people in media will launch a few good IDN based social sites which will get people used to seeing them.
4. After analyzing the data of the IDN campaign sites the larger companies will notice that young people are using IDNs, & they will seek & use better domains.

I should be sprinkled in most of these phases to help the market.

CNNIC (China ) charges 6.67 times as much for IDN as ASCII and they are selling like hot cakes. Two thirds of their revenue is now from IDN.

The Japanese approach, however, is more rational. Why wouldn't you charge more for those exotic but weird foreign terms. If they maintain ASCII at a premium over IDN in Japan, it is probably doomed.
