I gathered that 流动 means "flow" and not "mobile", 移动 means "mobile" according to previous topics (and indeed SE-results).

I am sure an independent native chinese will beg to differ, in any case, systran never was much of an authority on chinese translations, mdbg.net is and 流动电话 is translated as flow+phone = flowing phone which will be correct if you melt your 移动电话. A comparison between the SE-results proves my point.

There are several ways to say handphone/mobilephone in Chinese. 手机 is by far the most common and most desireable, although after that comes 手提电话，流动电话 and 移动电话. To be honest, i've never heard of the last one used to describe a phone, although China Mobile uses the word in its name.

Google Trends show nothing for anything except 手机.

They all mean mobile phone though.

移动 mobile --> mobile utilities, as in being able to utilize something while it's moving
手机 portable --> portable utilities, as in being able to easily transport something
流动 flow --> as in the flow of a liquid or a gas

流动电话 (as such) does not get baidu bids, it hardly produces google images (800+) and 流动 doesn't even have google trends.

移动电话 produces relevant ads (12,000 or so google images)

I leave it to the bidders to draw their own conclusion about the meaning of 流动电话 since it's their responsibility but to state that 移动电话 is the least popular is plain
wrong. The least popular clearly seems to be 流动电话 which is at best a very loose interpretation of flow + telephone.

I'm independent, and speak chinese. 流动电话 is definitely a term for mobile phones, but one of the least popular way to use it, in terms of spoken or written.

流动电话 is a Cantonese term and is used in HK, but it needs to be written in Traditional --- 流動電話. 手提電話 is also used in HK.
