Don't go by dictionary translations
It's the main term for a cellphone in Japanese no argument.

Re: Who said all the good .ws domains are gone?
The issue of whether WS can be marketed as Website when DNAME occurs is a large issue. Chances are probably not.
IMHO, even though .ws will probably never even reach a 10th of the value of other more popular extensions, the argument for own site development is extremely strong.
At the end of the day, with SEO, a premium is a premium IMHO.

I agree with you 101% here. I think the .ws extension is perfect for development. There are some IDN .com or .nets that many of us will never own, and if one wants to develop, I see no problem with a .ws name.
They are much cheaper than .tv and .cc, and with decent content and SEO, I believe one can do well with them.
I recently regged the following, purely for development purposes ..
греция.ws | Greece in Russian ( I hope !! )
grèce.ws | Greece in French
그리스.ws | Greece in Korean
To try and sell the above, I would most likely struggle to get reg fee back, but my plan is to develop them, along with several other similar IDNs that I have.

As X, the number of junk extension offered by ICANN and even CNNIC tends to infinity, I think this premise will be called into question especially by the search engines.

Based on transacted prices, .net is about 1/20th the worth of a .com.
If .ws in turn is about 1/10 the worth of a .net, then .ws is 1/200th the worth of a .com. ??

In the short-term probably not that many. It would of course be suicide for dot Mobi not to offer it in the World's biggest telecoms market, and it has always seem odd to me that dot Asia is going to attempt to launch without IDN. After that perhaps dot Travel might be interested in one of the fastest growing tourist destinations.
Of course then there are the thirty or so CNNIC extensions. As CNNIC themselves have said that the entire market is going to be ASCII in two years, it is alway concievable that these will all go IDN.

Well there is a question. I think in the short-term people are prepared to sacrifice good dot nets to protect more modest dot coms and therefore they are being sold into the market at a discount. I would think longer-term 1/5th is likely to be more realistic for the dot Net and dot Com ratio. Dot WS? Well,l I seriously doubt they are worth a tenth of a dot net.

1/20 is an estimation based on ascii.com.
E.g. $450k for sex.net; more than $12 million for sex.com.
~$150k for Mortgage.net; definitely more than $3 million for Mortgage.com if there were a sale.
$118,500 for creditcards.net; creditcards.com was sold for $2.75 million in 2004 i think?

Re: Who said all the good .ws domains are gone?
Yes, but you have to understand that Americans are more obcessive about dot Com than any other nation on Earth. It is their ccTLD or so they like to think!
