€ character now allowed in new registrations?
I tried to reg a domain with the € char, from two different registrars, using multiple language tags, and they all failed.
Are they prohibited now?

Hi,
Thanks for the offer, but I had some special ones in mind :-) I guess the door has been closed shut on € character regs.

Re: € character now allowed in new registrations?
Word-€ combos? Like €uro? All those are long gone.
If you are not interested, these domains will be dropped, never to return, because new domains of this type can not be registered.

The problem is not so much whether you can register them as whether the next version of Nameprep will recognise them. Even those that are already registered will become worthless if they no longer resolve even with an IDN supportive browser.

Re: € character now allowed in new registrations?
Stop spreading propaganda, RD. Michael Jackson wants € domains. And when Michael Jackson wants, he gets.

Re: € character now allowed in new registrations?
Re: the question above:
Dear Laurie,
Since you purchased your domains, there have been changes implemented
that prevent the mixing of code points. Thus, you can no longer have NEW
registrations that mix symbols with ASCII characters, which is the
category that your registrations fall into.
Please note that these changes do not affect your ability to renew your
domains. Any domain that you had previously registered can be renewed
through your Registrar.
Best Regards,
Bryant, Bonnie

yep keep in mind that ICANN and Verisign are for profit. Paul from ICANN made a few hundred thousand dollars in salary last year. They won't get rid of it unless they are really pushed to.

Re: € character now allowed in new registrations?
You can keep renewing .com names at verisign until the cows come home, but if they contain UNICODE characters that are banned in a future version of nameprep (cue John K), then they're not going to work.

Oh, if that were only true... :-) Actually, I only had one specific one in mind, but with the explanations so far, then it's better to forget it.

Re: € character now allowed in new registrations?
It is not whether you can renew or not that matters. What is important is whether the new version of Nameprep will support it. If it doesn't, it simply won't resolve. Grandfathering is not an issue here.
