Because of the recent ICANN meeting - they appear to be fixated with the idea of creating new IDN.IDN gTLD and watching them fail first. They did not release a single promising statement about aliasing existing gTLD, only ccTLD.

For search traffic, yes they currently work fine.
I have a feeling that the big sales and type-in won't come with ascii extension, though.
