Heck, I spent half the day yesterday in a part of San Francisco where barely anybody speaks English.
On top of that, the IDN support in browsers is high in North America.
My guess is that there is more legitimate traffic coming from North America than there is speculator traffic.

Not my experience. Most of it seems to have a speculator signature all over it. Doesn't generally convert well either, and at best is spasmodic.
The only real deal at the moment is Russian. And that is from a culture that has no great history of using dot Com!
