险 is actually the opposite of insurance.

险 is danger, and 保险 is anti-danger, or keeping you safe even when you're in danger.

Although we frequently see it being used as insurance in the short form of many terms like 车险 = 汽车保险, every Chinese knows 险 cannot stand alone to mean insurance.
