Typos in IDNs?

During the idn rush of Sep 2000 I baught what I thought was korea.com (http://한극.com), but it was not! korea.com is (한국.com).

For about a year I kept hitting my self in the head, but then decided to hold on to it because even surfers make small typos.

Last time I checked google.co.kr the correct "korea" has about 21Mil count, but the typo actually has about 3Mil count.

About 15% of references to "korea" on the Internet are actually a typo!

This is a note to us all who had registered miss-spelled names to check them one more time before letting them to the drop; maybe they are not that bad after all!

Typo is now offered for sale at http://한극.com.

I have an even more silly story from Thailand. I had a handful down as typos of top domain names and would have let them drop, but later realised by chance that the corruption actually occur after registration during the compilation of my database, so they were actually all good!

There's a big difference between a typo of a generic term (Korea) and a well-known trademarked term (Google).

No, this would be just a polite warning not to transgress further!

Well personally I wouldn't give you 10 Bucks to find out, but there are almost certainly some Pain Fetishists out there that would queue up for the opportunity.

Re: Typos in IDNs?

Yes genious there is much pain to be had in owning the typo of a trademark. Please go to WIPO. Please educate yourself. the owners of names like generic-viagra.com get stomped on too. Besides, yours is the first typo that I have ever seen that appeared in a Japanese-English dictionary. Because of this I fear yours may fall under the category of variation more than typo.

The registration of trademarked terms gives us all a bad name. You have already found some really good generic terms. These will bring you much greater rewards in the long run.

I don't think people WILL excuse your ignorance much longer. A number of people (including me) put quite a bit of effort into trying to explain this to you in detail, but you seem to have just ignored everything we said.

Here's the bottom line:-

- Typo of a 100% GENERIC WORD... maybe OK, maybe not
- Typo of a MADE UP TRADEMARK... definitely NOT OK and you'll get crushed by lawyers if they decide to go after you

The ability for some people to seemingly have made money off trading in trademark typos doesn't suddenly make it "legitimate". The industry is changing, the mood of key players likewise, and what was once grudgingly ok on the wild west frontiers of a new industry is no longer acceptable today.

Do what you like - ultimately none of us care. But if you ask for help, listen to it.

Im listening to you and i appreaciate the insite on this topic, obviously im not looking to get into any sort of trouble when there is much opportunity here, As far as people excusing my ingonarnce on this topic you dont have to exuse me if you dont want but Pardon me for Admitting that im not that educated on this topic, thats why i asked is it really a Big Deal, Becaue i only know of cases where people made some good money, But after reading youre bottom line about how the game is changing that makes complete sense.... Lighten up a little bit, im not tryn to give us or myself a bad name by having typo, i just needed to understand what the bid deal was, but now its apparent.....

Whoever bought that typo that was on dnjournal is in for a serious surprise..

if you saw the recent escapade on dnforum about yspace.com being sold as a typo for a few thousand without the previous owner (uglypeople.com) not telling him he was issued a legal letter to hand over the domain from myspace...

uglypeople.com conned the guy and now myspace is gonna get the domain back from the new owner and the new owner is out of alot of k's
