Vietnamese organizations and companies with websites ending in ‘.vn’ can get fresh domain names in Vietnamese with tonal and spelling marks added to the original names.
The informatics ministry’s Vietnam Internet Network Information Center said Tuesday that nearly 1,500 domain names had availed the service.

Websites will be accessible through both their original domain names and the new ones with the diacritics.

Applications should be sent online to http://tenmientiengviet.vnnic.vn with priority given to state organizations and early applicants.

This is a smart move, it will make the Vietnamese .vn domains a bit more useful.

Yeah, before there were only thousands registered. Now tens of thousands. Full IDN support may pave the way for the eventual registration of millions. Still some way to go though!

Logical steps along that path would presumably include lowering price and allowing other registrars to be resellers (I mean more than the current trivial discount for buying $10,000 worth) Don't bet the farm on this one, but let's watch it.

Register domain names for free

HA NOI — The Viet Nam Network Information Centre (VNNIC) will allow existing.vn owners to register one Vietnamese domain name free of charge.

Those who want to use Vietnamese domain names can register at http://tenmientiengviet.vnnic.vn, though availability is limited and the company is applying a first come, first serve policy.

Before dispensing these free domain names to the general public, VNNIC gave priority to state agencies, entities protected by copyright and industrial property groups.

Vietnamese domain names are listed in the international domain name (IDN) system.

I think it's a great idea.
Otherwise there will be nothing but parked pages on all the keyword Vietnamese domains.
It will be to the long term benefit of IDNs in general that the people with legitmate claims on these names will actuall get them, and hopefully build their businesses around them, instead of us lot sitting on them for years doing nothing with them.

It shows that the registry have a vested interest in promoting Vietnamese IDN so they can be used by Vietnamese people for Vietnames people.
It would be even better if after this period they open them up to Vietnamese natives for 6 months, foreigners excluded, and only then open it up to everyone else

Makes a nice change
