NEW YORK (APA) -- One more sign the technology sector is rebounding, at least in Asia: A Chinese internet domain name has been sold for seven figures, in the first public deal of this kind.

Last week, Roberto Javago sold the Chinese domain consisting of the registered Chinese characters for 'Taipei', for a cool $1 million, a healthy profit over the $12 registration fee he paid for it in 2003.

The buyers, Taiwanese construction industry officials who have opted to remain anonymous behind the acquiring company, Taiwan Com Ltd., want to create a portal for the Asian capital.

"In the last couple of weeks, international domain names were selling for significantly less than what they did in '06," said Monte Cahn, chief executive of Moniker Online Services, which initially wanted to broker the sale, but ended up withdrawing when anonymous dealers, reportedly backed by the white shoe domain auction house thedroit.com stepped in.

He said the seven-figure price tag for Taipei "is a big indicator of what's yet to come for international domain names, a development Moniker has been proud to support since its inception in 1984."

The seller, Roberto Javago, believes he could have gotten much more for 'Taipei.com' by waiting longer.

But a spokesman for the small group of active international domainers, who number less than a dozen, but own more than 500,000 other such names in all the languages of the world, said that Javago was right to want the money now -- so that he can buy even more domains before prices really skyrocket.

KI, you are not in on the fun. This versatile domain was posted here in the sales section so many times it became a running joke in 2006. Just a blast from the past for the old timers.

Why did you bump this thread but not one of his sales threads? Is it April 1st again?

I have read them all but still don't get why you have been picking on him. His original asking price makes more sense than the most of sales thread here. In fact, if I were a Taiwanese, I'd probably buy it. Also I'm pretty sure that many forum members list same domains for multiple times.

The guy obviously had so much fun that he stopped posting two years ago.

@ K.I

I think this is one of those jokes where you had to be there at the time to appreciate it.

I can tell you that it was certainly not a case of bullying, if anything it was forum spamming on behalf of the seller; and as you know that never goes down well in any forum.

btw, have you thought of choosing a different avatar? this angry bear, and the avatar before it - also some angry animal if I remember correctly, can mess with your ch'i

I guess you don''t check sales forum regularly. It's full of bumps and repetitive posts. Anyway, if you think he was spamming, you should have banned him instead of bashing him. It's still not too late for that.

It was a bull before. It's just a bull vs bear thing. ;)

If I remember correctly, this all happened back under the old regime, and at a time when the admin had gone awol and there were little or no banning powers. Spammer or not, he has some awesome names.
