where's it hosted?

It's a hosting setting.

for example at Dreamhost when submitting the domain for hosting you need to choose one of these 3 options:

How do you like the www in your URL?
Both http://www.domain. com/ and http://domain. com/ work.

Add "www." if somebody goes to http://domain. com/

Remove "www." if somebody goes to http://www.domain. com/

I am not technically competetant in this area but it something to do with permanent redirects. The following may help:

http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php
http://www.tamingthebeast.net/articles3/spiders-301-redirect.htm
http://www.isitebuild.com/301-redirect.htm
http://www.text-link-ads.com/starter_kit.php?source=GoogleText

Like Alpha said if you have third party hosting, they will probably handle all this for you.

Quite simply, if the DNS is not configured to answer queries for www.mydomain.com, then it will not do so.

The "www" is nothing more than a hostname inside a domain. It could be called anything, really, e.g. "www2", "w3", "blog", etc.

For the domains I choose to develop, I do my own hosting on my dedicated server in the Netherlands, connected right at the hub of 8 international links. I also run my own DNS servers, one in .nl and one in .fi, for redundancy. I configure them with wildcards to answer queries for any hostname in the domain, e.g. "*.mydomain.com" points to 205.134.12.15 (example IP address). In this case, it would return 205.134.12.15 for any hostname you prepend to mydomain.com.

Thanks guys, I have been struggling with this for a day and finally figured it out. I did not have the host name www set to anything. Ingenious. Thanks again for the responses.

Incidentally, Alpha, why are you now a rooster?

I am the little Red Hen.

I made an agreement with RD, I would change my avatar to a Little Red Hen, if he would change his to Captain Smith of the Titanic ;)
