As a bid from a local, this gives the term some credibility to me.

Could you share an accurate translation/use of the word?

الإقامة means Residency. And also means residence
examples :
- if someone want to stay in Dubai, he will search for الإقامة في دبي (Residence in Dubai) to get info about hotels.. residence.. laws of residence visa..

Also, الإقامة is a kind of Visa that lots of Arabs like to get :p
Two famous kinds of visas are : الإقامة (Residence visa) and الزيارة (visitor visa)
Residence visa is more important than Visitor visa IMO
