I like the fact about Ham moving into making niche development...

start small & expand, development comes in all forms...

Got to give credit to DomainState (http://www.domainstate.com) members I found it posted over there.

Thanks, great article. Everytime I see Yun Ye's Marchex deal mentioned, I just wonder how much it would be worth today.

I found a quote from Frank Schilling (http://www.circleid.com/posts/domain_aftermarket_asset_repricing/) on the subject...

Marchex is a great example. They paid 164 million (155 plus stock) for the names in an 8.5X PPC transaction.. They presumably re-wrote a lousy traffic contract into a great one and converted that into a 3-4X multiple. But here’s the kicker.. IMO they absolutely positively own 25,000 mid-tier domain names (with type-in traffic) that are worth $20,000 each on a resale. That’s $500,000,000.00 And they still have 170,000 names many of which are worth 10’s of thousands to Millions (ie. Beijing.com, Debts.com).

Thank you for sharing this success story, Olney.

This article will probably create more enemies of domainers than friends.

And a flood of noobs all convinced that mysuckydomain.com is worth 1mm.

Watch for the IP community to pressure GAC/ICANN into shutting down wildcard DNS on ccTLD's.

so he's the .cm hijacker

this is certainly gonna put a big arse cat in with the pigeons

is it just me, or is 2007 the year of the mega-domainer coming out

expect Yun Ye and Lord Lucan to make an appearance at a forum near you soon

Probably makes little difference now.

IDN has put the fox in the hen house over two letter extensions.

A lot of countries are going to be moving away from them soon. Even in English Oman is likely to go to dot Oman rather than dot Om because the Arabs really do like to see things spelt out in full.

The other problem with ccTLDs is it is a bit like Russian Gas Developments. It is yours until they decide they want it back.

I thought it was May 2007 WTF ?

And this is funny as hell !

He once used a Vancouver post office box for domain-related mail until the day he opened a package that contained a note reading "You are a piece of shit," accompanied by an actual piece of it.

During one six-month period starting in late 2000, Ham registered more than 10,000 names.

Those dates are very coincidental considering this guy is Korean!

Sounds like he got involved in the Verisign Test Bed?

Is the is guy an IDNer?

Let's be clear, sounds like he's a Korean-Canadian to me. Big difference. He may have no language skills to speak of. But if we are lucky, he's already a big collector of Korean terms....

I don't know. IDNs are not mentioned in this article.

His idea to get traffic without buying domains is very original.
Actually he owns all .cm-domains that are not registered yet.
If you type in http://<any IDN/punycode>.cm/ in place of http://<any IDN/punycode>.com,
you will be redirected to Ham's web site. So we can consider him an IDNer anyway :)

As long as .cm doesn't support IDNs, Ham owns all .cm IDNs :)

Thanks for the article.

Yes, I realize that I am a microscopic turd compared to this guy.

Nevertheless, speaking of Cameroon, I'm sure I have this dude beat on Cameroon-related .com's, even if he has me on the .cm's.

Remember, Cameroon is mostly Francophone.

LeCameroun.com - French for "Cameroon"
Camerounais.com - French for "Camerooonian"
AfriqueCentrale.com - obvious meaning
LAfrique.com - " "

Cute. No offense but I'd rather trade places with him.

This guy's sure resourceful, i remembered checking out .cm a year ago, the registry simply closed shop!! I can't believe that they would give a foreigner the rights to all .cm. Has all the businessmen in Cameroon died??
