Chinese IDN Traffic?

Do Chinese use IDN much yet? Are people seeing a lot of type-in traffic from good, generic Chinese IDN names? How does the traffic compare to non-IDN (ASCII)?

Assuming they use (or will use) them, which is better: 'IDN'.com or 'IDN'.cn ?

I get close to zero views on mine, and what I do get often comes from Korea or Taiwan or US.

Anecdotal evidence is that most Internet users in China (even tech savvy ones) don't know about IDN and most are still on IE6 which can't view on IDN.

There's a select group in China who are IDN-aware but they tend to be in the business of flipping, buying company names to sell to them later etc.

I'm taking the view that views and clicks are not important at the moment. But I'm an optimist

I would not concern yourself about traffic.

Unless you are prepared to spend thousands on domains which currently have minimal traffic, you are unlikely to acquire anything very interesting in Chinese dot com. Dot CN are going to be pretty hard to find as well!

There is hardly any type-in traffic for generic asian IDNs, very top names like major cities or one of those Top 20 keywords type of name might get a few type-in a day (i'm talking about .COM, for .CN, ,maybe a few per month. .NET gets as little as .CN.), but beyond that no, unless there is a similar ascii site, especially so for the case of japanese idn .COMs.

Most traffic names you see on sale, are indexed. If you buy indexed traffic, you should request to see Analytics statistics, and be prepared to continously develop the site to maintain your SERP status.

I rarely see IDNs in the search results, when I do Google searches in Chinese, but just thought there might be some traffic nevertheless.

You'll be surprised how SE traffic will appear for domains - i've IDNs that never appeared in Google, whether search with or without extension but analytics show Google traffic.

A person is not guilty until proven guilty, but for the case of traffic IDNs, particularly Asian IDNs, it is guilty of SE traffic until proven otherwise.

Here's some analytics data from some of my minisites for the past week. The stats are for about a hundred japanese names, a hundred chinese names and a dozen french names, and two or three german and swedish names.

You will notice that SE traffic for japanese names is 20 times of direct traffic.
