im a newbie, so i have a doubt. When you register a symbol domain, why do you call it black phone? it means i can register one domain as red phone, another yellow, etc? or one symbol and that is it?

i asked because the idnclub member wrote black phone, so it is telephone or black telephone? can someone register a yellow telephone????

☎.com BLACK TELEPHONE

i like these symbols. thanks!

Check http://www.unicode.org/charts/symbols.html for a list of symbols.

☎ is called BLACK PHONE because that is what it was called in Unicode. The reason is there is also a ☏ WHITE PHONE.

Each character has a name. That's ☎'s name. BLACK PHONE. See: http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2600.pdf

They aren't coloured though. They are just like any other letter character.

Thanks that was very useful to understand domains symbols.

now, as all the ones i like are registered, whats the problem with registering word+symbol -like some guys did in here- i mean travel+sun, travel+rain, etc? Verisign will take down these domains? thats why some members are complaining or they dont like them? i really like them a lot. And second, im new and not a SEO, but can i take one and put it like this
www.travel.com/☎.html
instead of www.travel.com/contact.htlm ??

i think it is amazing there were so few, i didnt get any!!!! ;D Idnclub and you blastfromthepast are amazing, you got them almost all these few single symbols. I envy you.

so whats the problem with word+single? i dont mind about SEO, overture, etc, but about Verisign take them down these domains? and can i do this www.travel.com/☎.html ?

Symbol domains are to some extent like art works of the internet age.

In the past, people buy masterpiece works like Cezanne, Picasso, today, people buy symbol domains. The rarer and more beautiful the symbol, the more expensive.

However, the future legal status of symbol domains still need to be verified and confirmed.

Hi blastfromthepast,

If it can not display the symbol correctly on this forum, I suggest that you should describe each symbol, and put on the extension with the symbol to claim the exactly domain you have...

I can see them. No problem.

BTW, I figured out what I needed to do and can now reg symbol names at opensrs, so that I find interesting.

I couldn't resist it, I regged a porn vanity name.

One word: Jealousy. :) As for "them" taking the domains down. They haven't exactly encouraged them. But they haven't prohibited them. Its up to each registrar to make exceptions. Some, as you have noticed, have allowed them.

Hi, I too am wondering about newbie's question:
word+symbol. I read the entire thread but it didn't seem as if anyone definitively answered this question. Is this something that has specifically been prohibited by Verisign? i.e. we can register symbols, but not a word+symbol? Or is it AS okay as registering just a symbol (meaning that some registrars will do it and others not, and that Verisign hasn't 100% determined if it's okay or not.)
THANKS!!

It is not prohibited by verisign. What is prohibited is mixing scripts such as mixing latin with greek to obtain domain names that look like they are in one language ie. sex.com with one letter from a non-latin character set. Internet Explorer 7 also flags such existing domains making them not very useful. I don't see how any of this could apply to symbol domains.
