Drew, hoping you and your family are safe and sound!
Catagory 5 Hurricane "Dean" is pounding into the Yucutan, just to north of Belize.
Saying a prayer for everyone in the path of this huge storm.

If he is indeed in that region, best of luck to Drewbert and his family, hope you are well.

Good luck, Drewbert.

Looks like it missed FS by about 120 miles to the south.

I remembered a hurricane post earlier by Drewbert, just a few months ago about the impending season.
Someone pegged this one.

Thanks for the posts guys.

We made it through OK. Cancun just got the edge. Everyone was super-prepared after going through over 24 hours of hurricane force winds when Wilma visited 2 years ago.

Was a bit of a non-event here, I got bored at 3am and went to bed earlier than I usually do :)

Had a couple of short power cuts but nothing like the 2 weeks without power from Wilma.

Cheers,

jose

It's unfair. I have never seen an hurricane... (I am in Portugal)
I am joking, of course. Cheers Drewbert.

Luckily I have a generator and a parabolic wireless antenna for long range wireless pickup!

I'll take a forewarned Cat 5 hurricane over a sudden Richter 8 earthquake any day of the week.

The best place to see a hurricane is a TV documentary. Cheers, Drewbert. I hope that is the last monster of the season.

It almost certainly won't be, but it may well be the last big one to get so close to Belize.

This is all tied to Bush's wholly irresponsible attitude to Global Warming.

There are others of us in the danger zone, too. Not just Belize.

Hurricanes were around long before Bush was born. Hope for a quiet season.

Still a lot of time for it to change course, but good to make sure your antenna is in good repair just in case!

Trust me I know. I live on a barrier island in South Carolina, right smack in the middle of hurricane territory.
Our last nearby hit (went in Charleston to our north) was a Cat 4 - Hurricane Hugo.

I'm still up in Cancun so safe from this one, most likely.

It's looking like it might end up more powerful than Wilma. Yikes.

If it hits Belize City it'll be a disaster. Mexico had few deaths with Hurricane Dean because the Mexican Army came in with trucks and moved the poor Mayans out of their stick houses in the danger area into concrete shelters. The deaths in Mexico actually occurred over on the "mainland" where people weren't expecting problems and it was caused by flooding.

Belize is mainly iron roof weatherboard houses (British colony) and in the poor areas the houses are just barely standing already. The Belize govt is practically bankrupt as I understand it, and they do NOT have the military resources to move people out of danger (there's a British Army barracks at the airport in Belize City - for jungle training - but I have no idea how many people are there or what equipment they have). If they had any clue they'd ask the Mexican Govt for help moving people, if it looks like it is going to whack Belize City.

ditto

It is peak hurricane season. Sucks. Looks like Honduras now, but Mexico will get more rain from two different hurricanes in two days.
