I noticed the recent few years that there has been recently been talk of a revival of original han chinese fashion on internet forums.

For 400 years, traditional chinese fashion has been the familar to most cheongsam, or qipao, which is what the waitresses wear in chinese restaurants.

But some cosplay enthusiasts are saying this is manchurian fashion and are advocating to revert to original chinese fashion, which some others would feel look more like japanese kimono - except that japanese fashion originated from china.

Hi Touchring,

The cheongsam apparently originated in Shanghai in the 20's / 30's and therefore could be associated with the last emperor and the Manchurian period (as the two coincide time wise).

Although the Kimono in it's current form (and the cheongsam) are actually very different from traditional Chinese dresses from all other periods in Chinese history - the 2nd photo is actually closer to the majority of Chinese Traditional dress than the cheongsam ever was ;)

There are a few good sites online for both Chinese traditional costumes and these are also seen in the Chinese paintings from different periods.

So it could be argued this has little to do with the Japanese Kimono and more to a resurgence of Chinese traditional culture & dress styles ;)

Cheers - Asiaplay

I saw this argument as well on some forum, but the cheongsam is still a modified version of the manchurian attire.

The traditional chinese attire which is like "bathrobes" that are left over right in the middle with a belt on the waist, same as korean hanbok and japanese kimono.
