Why english is a universal language?
(I think it’s simple, and uses mostly ASCII. For instance, using German Umlaute characters for domain names is still a pain in 2007.)

Europeans are generally conversant in English, but the same cannot be said of most east asians.

Logically, it should be like this:
This is America, when ordering "Speak American".

In New England people speak English. I'm not sure about the other states. :P

Cultural hegemony is about economic power, which is why Europeans are starting to learn Chinese and Hindi.

It targets all non-English speakers, including native Americans (indigenous people) that speak native American languages.

I doubt it. Americans despise middle easterners and asians the most. Spanish is almost an official language in many parts of the country. US Gov and state gov websites all provide materials in english and spanish. It's the Iranians and Pakistanis that most people have a problem with when it comes to foreigners not using english - they wouldn't care so much about a French person who couldn't speak english well.

PHILADELPHIA — Bistec con queso? Not at Geno's Steaks.

An English-only ordering policy has thrust one of Philadelphia's best-known cheesesteak joints into the national immigration debate.

Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno's -- which together with its chief rival, Pat's King of Steaks, forms the epicenter of an area described as "ground zero for cheesesteaks" -- has posted small signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING `SPEAK ENGLISH."'

Vento, a short, fiery man with a ninth-grade education, arms covered in tattoos and a large diamond ring in his ear, also sells "freedom fries" to protest France's opposition to the Iraq war.

LOL, Geno's is obviously an Italian name and Vento sounds Italian as well.

The freedom fries thing is hilarious! I also remember the idiot restaurant owners who took all their cases of french wine down to the river and poured them empty. It was probably a good year for fish :-)

Post credit crunch. The tide is changing.

The Europeans burnt, have learnt their lesson. Lots of money and talents fleeing from America right now, flowing into Asia. Look at the stock markets in Hong Kong and China.

So it looks like Frank will need to revise his opinion on IDNs - only a matter of time.

The fortune change over looks inevitable now, unless some joker starts a war with Iran, sending oil to $300 a barrel, set off the equivalent of an economic neutron bomb, and brings down everyone. Not a likely scenario since wallstreet will suffer the most, but i won't discount that since the US is going to lose control of the middle east oil if status quo continues.

Russia recently, sent a technical team to Syria to upgrade the radar system after Israel managed to penetrate their airspace using stealth technology.

Americans would rape Alaska before they'd pay double what they're currently paying for gasoline. It's already difficult to restrain the dogs at this price point.

I was trying to picture him with the beard shaved off and a pair of silly heavy rimmed spectacles. Not sure, could be.

From a strategic point of view, this is a possibility.

1. China and much of Asia is experiencing a bubble, but China has shown that is possible to convert bubble into real growth. Each time it looks like the bubble in the cities will prick, more of the hundreds of millions of people from the countryside will move into the city, creating jobs, demand/wealth, filling the empty apartments, factories, offices, and fueling the next bubble, the process continues over and over again without pricking.

2. Once China and Russia gains wealth, they will be able to invest in technology and strengthen their military, pouring more support into Iran, and creating a standoff with Nato.

3. The Americans are tired of Iraq and will have to withdraw soon - so Iraqi oil will fall into Iranian influence, more so since their leadership now shares the same religion.

4. But any oil crisis will prick this China led bubble, stop the process, and throw China into a recession similar to 1930s America. The rest of asia will go into minor recession. The outflow of money and talent into Asia will slow down. This will delay the change over process for at least 5 years.

Last, Greenspan already said - it's about the oil.

It is only a bubble if it is unsustainable.

Internal demand in China is going to be unsatiable for at least a decade.

Even if China out grows America by 2020, its per capita GDP hence wages will still only be a quarter of those in the US. It is difficult to see how they could become uncompetitive with anyone except perhaps India.

China is also intent on going up the value chain.

India is a bigger opportunity to China than competition. China products swarm Indian markets.

Called "pandering your your nutjob base" I believe.

It'll be great seeing a multiple-divorcee who had the NYC emergency centre built near his office so he could put a hotel suite in it for himself "restore honour and dignity" to the whitehouse.

Well, clearly there is no room for this nonsense in the civilised world.

I guess we should just be relieved that it only happens elsewhere!
