China's rural netizens reach 37 million
China's National Network Information Center(CNNIC) recently issued a report on 2007 China's rural internet situation. This was the first time that China has published an overall report on internet usage in rural areas.
The report shows that China has 37 million rural netizens - similar to the number of township netizens.
By June 2007, among the 737 million people living in rural areas, netizens accounted for 5.1% of the total; while 125 million townspeople could access the internet, accounting for 21.6 % of the total town population. According to the report, the gap between rural areas and towns is obvious, but narrowing, as the number of rural netizens today has increased from the 23.1 million in 2006.
