Looks like a huge international gathering, anyone from here going?
Also, hoping ICANN has printed some nice t-shirts to read: IDNs are LIVE! :)

Looking forward to any conference news from Tina Dam.

Everyone is there because this is where IDN ccTLD will be nailed down. Nobody wants to get screwed!

Check this out from 2004...the first name on the reg list at that ICANN meeting was the
"odd appearance of one Hermione Granger representing Hogwarts".

Seems they used a bit of Harry Potter in theming the meeting content.
So it appears they are preparing to work some magic again with all the international delegates.

Reasons for choice of venue are becoming more apparent.

"LAX handles more "origin and destination" (i.e. not connecting) passengers than any other airport in the world."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Angeles_Airport

ICANN presented this venue because of lack of invitations elsewhere, but it is my guess that this has always been pencilled in as a Major International Bun Fight. The venues are so close to the runway, they will be able to see the planes taxi-ing from the windows.

Don't think you need to attend at all. It is pretty obvious they are going to be arguing about what goes on a list of extensions that is going to be proposed for immediate delegation and how long that list is. The only issue at point is whether they manage to reach a consensus or not.

Alright just got off the phone with ICANN rep. Morning meetings are closed to the public... no one is allowed in unless 'invited.' At 4-6PM Pacific there is a conference mainly related to the IDN tlds (he told me the meetings were yesterday, so I wish I had gone)... so I may actually go to that. He said we cannot make our own comments, so it's just a sit and listen type of thing.

Back to sleep for me it is!

You mean IDN is not the main thingy of the meeting?

There are many other meetings that are OPEN. The value in going might be networking and making a few contacts. I would imagine there will be a good bit of chatter about the direction of things.

This is a central venue and many domainers will turn up. ASCII domainers also follow ICANN's trajectory. A lot of them are going to pick up on a lot unfamiliar buzz. Whether this will actually make them sit up and take notice is another thing, but any one with half a brain will be able to tell that IDN related issues are consuming well over 50% of the entire agenda.

In regards to the conference @ 4-6, he said that there would just be a lot of talk regarding IDNs, but there would also be other talks as well.

Looks as though they are getting stuck up to their eye balls in treacle again!
