Overall reasonably weak list of GEOs (especially when compare to IDNs held by some here!!!).

These few make me smile...

Notes: Lisbon is a capital of Portugal (I really hope the person who plans on buying already knows this - lol... scary they add this note!)

macauchinarealestate.com
macauchinatravel.com
macauhotline.com
macaupackagetours.com
macautickets.cn
macautourists.info
macautravelblog.com
macautravelforum.com
macautravelpackage.com

New trend - add Macau and you have a domain everyone will want (yawn)... just wondering where Macauchina is though... maybe they also have "shetlandislandsunitedkingdomrealestate" and "shetland-islands-united-kingdom-realestate" as well :)

Auckland for 500,000 reserve (umm... thats almost 40 cents for every person who lives there... guess this one is not a serious sale - but is nice to dream!).

Rubberduck - so what was the concussion of the GEO IDNs you submitted... or did you pull them when saw the pathetic list of ascii domains up for auction?
(I also understood you were putting one forward with a 20K reserve or so)...
Any news?

Cheers - Asiaplay

This is sort of true Jose - is called the Lisboa ;)
I guess it is the name of a few restaurants and businesses as well !!!... however, I would say the domain would be best used as the capital of Portugal.

I was laughing more that they had to tell people where Lisbon was :)... hehe... as if it was more difficult than half of the other obscure GEO locations on the list...

The better geos are already in the hands of end users and not for sale.

When you are talking about geos, you are talking about something that has emotional attachment. They just disappear from the market along the way.

When are you guys gonna realise that we will never be able to piggy-back on an ASCII auction?

In fact .. I have no desire to put good names in an ASCII auction of any kind.

We need our own auction / conference but the chances of that happening are very remote to say the least

They don't get it .. They don't need it .. They don't want it

Wrong market .. Wrong Country .. Wrong audience

It is not the fact that we are not in the auction that peeves me. It is the fact that I feel we might be the butt of some kind of practical joke. If that is not the impression Moniker is trying to create, then then had better get their act together.

I have actually never been that side of the Pond. Frankly, I don't think I have missed out on very much. I certainly have no intention of spending the next ten years trying to educate a lot of academic under-achievers.

Guys, you have every right to be a little miffed but please note, I have just confirmed with Moniker that this is just a preliminary list, and they will have an updated list with the 5 IDNs up and live either today or over the weekend. We gave you are word and we'll make sure Moniker lives up to it.

And Duck, it might be a great opportunity to visit this side of the pond. Not only will you find it very affordable, you'll get to meet some players in the domain/internet industry...much harder to ignore a face than an avatar!

I disagree...many people attending and bidding are domain investors. While most have probably heard about IDNs, many will see them "on auction" backed by two very credible organizations (Associated Cities and Moniker).

Some will open their eyes to the opportunity. And those that truly do their homework on IDNs may see future opportunites and perhaps a great buying opportunity well beyond what anything in the ascii realm can give them.

I disagree...
The proof will be in the pudding but at this present time I don't forsee an ASCII crowd leaping onto the bandwagon.

While there may be one or two who are aware of the IDN investment opportunities presented to them at this auction it is not going to really make that much difference. I forsee the IDNs entered 'maybe' being snapped up at low prices and not at prices that they could command in the near future.

It's an ASCII auction, for ASCII buyers .. gonna be a hard sell and if sold at all it'll be for pennies on the $

Lack of knowledgable organisation has let the Italian spelling of Bogota, a South American country that certainly doesn't speak, read or write Italian slip through so what does that say? They didn't get anything better offered? Reserves were too high?

You think an impulse buyer is gonna be impressed when he / she realises what they've bought and then runs to all the ASCII forums with tales of woe?

It's things like this that can and will set IDNs back a lot more.
What do you think people will remember?
The nice IDN that was picked up for a bargain price .. or the now Italian city of Bogota?

I'm all for exposure, the right kind of exposure .. good luck to those whose names make the list .. :)

If the IDN auction is to have any credibility they need to remove bogotà.com post-haste.

It makes it look like:

a) They don't have a clue which are good IDNs
b) IDNs are primarily used for phishing

Not good.

Baby steps. This isn't going to happen overnight but it is headed in the right direction. Hopefully there will be some buyers
for IDNS and some good sales reported in the domaining community. Any publicity is good publicity. These type of events
also help to "legitimize" idns as viable urls that indeed work within the system.

Most domainers are lemmings.

They look to the likes of Moniker, Rick, Frank, indeed anyone who has or appears to have made a lot of money from domains. If they associate IDNs with any of those whom they regard as Iconic figures, then they will buy and because they understand f*ck all about the language, you can see them doing all the hyphenated three letter combos in cyrillics. :p

Looking at the traffic stats, it appears that initial attempts of systematic mining of the IDN space have reached at least the testing phase. Somebody with serious resources behind them is taking a much closer look.

Not quite sure where it will lead in the short-term, as tasting is going to be tough with substantial volumes of traffic. The ball is, however, at last rolling.

That domain is longer than I have ever seen in a live auction. What's next? HonoluluHawaiiOceanFrontProperty.com ? We have really reached the point of diminishing returns in ascii land.

I see this as the turning point for IDNs. Although I didn't have any names good enough to enter into this auction, just remember when you are lighting your fat cigars that I was the one who approached, discussed, and basically sold Associated Cities on the idea of accepting IDNs into this auction. I also agree that it will not sell, not at this time but it is the exposure that is the whole crux , it will definitely attract attention, maybe in to the media mainstream.

The price is also a good factor , too low and the medium long term prospects for IDN would be at risk.

That said there is a name at the CAC auction Fun888.com $750K , am I missing something ?
