Quarter of Brits think Churchill was myth: poll Sun Feb 3, 7:12 PM ET

LONDON (AFP) - Britons are losing their grip on reality, according to a poll out Monday which showed that nearly a quarter think Winston Churchill was a myth while the majority reckon Sherlock Holmes was real.

The survey found that 47 percent thought the 12th century English king Richard the Lionheart was a myth.

And 23 percent thought World War II prime minister Churchill was made up. The same percentage thought Crimean War nurse Florence Nightingale did not actually exist.

Three percent thought Charles Dickens, one of Britain's most famous writers, is a work of fiction himself.

Indian political leader Mahatma Gandhi and Battle of Waterloo victor the Duke of Wellington also appeared in the top 10 of people thought to be myths.

Meanwhile, 58 percent thought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Holmes actually existed; 33 percent thought the same of W. E. Johns' fictional pilot and adventurer Biggles.

UKTV Gold television surveyed 3,000 people.

Adolf said that he didn't need to worry about an old drunk. Winston said that he took more out of alcohol than alcohol ever took out of him.

Meh, I dunno what happened to that post, I had more about it. Anyway, I think it's neat how stuff can be false or fake or not exist or whatever yet be as real as anything else.

Doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure out that the vast masses are largely ignorant. Goes for every group too large to fit into a room. Certainly applies to people from all countries, people in all cultures, people of all races, people of all religions (including "none"), people of all political affiliations, people of all sexual orientations, people of all heights, people with all skin types (oily, dry, etc.), people with all eye colors, and so on. Equally true for right-handed historians, six-foot tall vegetarians, etc.

In this day and age of great technological advances, most of us still believe in crap that doesn't exist (provide your own example here). Relatively few believe in sensible things like IDN. Maybe some day we'll be advanced enough to educate our children.

Been said many times by many people in many ways: "There's a smattering of geniuses out there, and a whole lot of fools!"
