You have to consider that these names are, of course in the hands of investors expecting returns on the order of what they paid for them.

Still, it seems silly. It's not even a single word, and it's something people hate to deal with or work in.

Camps and stockquotes were a steal when you consider that turkey.

Look Monte explained to me after the fiasco at Associated Cities that his Auctioneers are entitled to bid on behalf of the Seller. In British English, as I understand it, that would be Shilling Bidding but in America apparently, it is just custom and practice.

The important thing to know, however, is that there was never any cash on the end of a lot of these "bids".

As RD mentioned, the auctioneer is allowed to shill bid up to the reserve. But, still, that puts the reserve at 2.5m or more. I'm sorry, but it's not a seven-figure name. Two words that NO ONE wants to hear.

The Auctioneer actually makes a brief statement to this effect at the beginning of proceedings, but it is highly ambiguous and is unlikely to show up on most buyer's radar screens. So whilst probably legal, it is not really very ethical.

IMO a shill bid is a shill bid the reserve price range is known i believe so whats the point to bid under that unless they are vanity bids because they know they will not have to buy.

I believe in the (distant) past they allowed a partial refund of the bidding fees when a real purchase is made. I think that was probably a good idea. The bidding fee does play an important role in minimizing phony bids, but the bar is set pretty high to bid on cheaper domains. For example, paying a $500 bidding fee to buy a $500 domain is a real lose.

I sold one domain for $17,500 in live auction (no results on my silent auction domains) so the bidding fee is no big deal at that level. Looking at some of the reserves in the seven figure range, it almost looks like they are getting desperate to get *any* quality domains in the auction list.

The problem I have with the "phony" bids is that when you see a "pass" at a certain level it means absolutely nothing. It is just the highest phony bid before giving up. These types of bids (below reserve) are legal here, and commonly referred to as "chandelier bids".
