The .SE registry is to make 4000+ reserved Geo domain names available for public registration on 16 December 2008.
In 2003, when the .SE registry relaxed registration rules for it’s ccTld, and allowed domain names with the .SE extension to be registered on a “first-come first-serve: basis, it reserved a collection of 4000+ Geographical domain names it deemed worthy of protection - names of Swedish municipalities and world locations mainly. The reservation was placed for a period of 5 years.
In 2008 the five year reservation period has elapsed and following a review the .SE board has decided to lift the reservation and allow the 4000+ domain names to be publicly registered.
“SE want to give Sweden’s municipalities one last chance to go through and register the domain names they believe are important to hold before the reservation is lifted and free registration takes effect” says Maria Ekelund, PR and Corporate Communications at .SE
The domain names will be released for public registration on December 16, 2008.
