Article dated Nov, 2008, and indicates registration will begin in July of this year with expected 350,000 regs. First I had seen where someone put a date on any idn.idn rollout.

Web Registration in .РФ Zone to Begin in July
Russia will become the first nation with the non-Latin domain. ICANN Corp that manages domain distribution in the Internet accepted yesterday the registration application for Cyrillic domain. The registration of web-sites in Russia will begin in early July and roughly 350,000 sites will probably emerge in two years.

ICANN’s BOD received yesterday an application for creating a Cyrillic domain - .РФ, RU-Center that is one of the biggest domain registrars in Russia announced yesterday. The application was elaborated by RU Domain Coordination Center by order of the RF Communication Ministry. RU Domain’s Coordination Center that currently supervises domain registration in .RU zone and accredits registrars was appointed the domain’s administrator, said Andrei Vorobiev from RU-Center.

The .РФ zone domains are expected to cover roughly 20 percent of current .RU, forecasted Dmitry Ufaev, the managing partner at RBC Hosting Center. Some 1.75 million domains have been registered in .RU, i.e. around 350,000 new web sites will probably appear during two years in .РФ zone. Registering a domain in .RU costs 600 ruble, and you will pay another 450 ruble for the annual extension. “The price averages roughly 300 ruble, as the hosting providers often artificially understate the prices," Ufaev said.

Finam has estimated this year’s worth of domain registration at about $12 million, $35 million with the domain extension taken into account. “The domain registration in .РФ will yield roughly $3 million,” forecasted Finam analyst Tatiana Menkova.

Well, it doesn't actually say they'll work from day 1.

registration <> activation

This is just more well-executed political presssure on ICANN, to actually finish their (so far 2 year old) "fast track" process.

This is propaganda. ICANN used this an example to show how the evaluation process would work. Russia stated stated they had been accepted. Of course there is little risk they won't be so ICANN never made an issue out of it. But if ICANN don't get their act together they will get tussled over the ball.

The Americans, keep making the point that their creditors need them as much as they need their creditors. Let me ask you something. When was the last time you made an ultimatum to your Bank Manager? And when was the last time that actually made a difference?

Maybe one of our Russian members can check the registrars website for any updated information. If the Russian registry starts accepting applications in July, it will be into Q4 before they get underway, barring any unforseen ICANN/ political issues.

"In the meantime, Russia announced its plan to launch an IDN version of .RU on July 1."

.ir is already running their IDN ccTLD.

Of course, the argument about whether or not ICANN will force the IDN ccTLD's into signing contract is void with .ir because ICANN is forbidden to execute any contracts with Iran.

Didn't stop .ir staying in the root when ICANN took the reins, and it won't stop the IDN version either.

ccTLD's make voluntary payments to ICANN for "(mis)managing the root". I'm pretty sure ICANN can't take money from Iran, so what's the hold-up?
