Very worrying.

Hopefully they're having trouble fixing it because their tech guys are down here at ICANN.

It was just their web server that died. NS and API etc were still answering to pings. Hopefully they haven't been cracked open.

It was just their web server that died.
Even narrower than that. Their main application server seems to be not responding. But you can get a response for older protocols and from asset servers like this: http://park.dynadot.com

You should be doing better than DreamHost Jose.

jose

You should be doing better than DreamHost Jose.

Dreamhost shared host has things you can't find elsewhere!

Their control panel is light years ahead of any other in the industry (cpanel looks like a hacked old web 1.0 app when comparing)

They are the only ones that allow you to compile and run your own code on their servers! Yes, c++! Some of my sites will never run now because of this.

They are the ones who really allow unlimited domains! The other say they do, but are just subdomain hacks! Try a 404 on one of those and you default to your main domain. For each domain you REALLY have your own root FTP, and database host, including database naming and user naming!

sbe18
3rd March 2009, 05:00 AM
I have just started on Dreamhost...
agreed on ease of use...

much better than the cpanel I have been using at hostgator..

being able to assign FTP permissions easily is very nice...

I'm suprised you still use shared hosting. I've got all of what you mention, and it doesn't take handholding a hosting company to do. Its all in apache config.

That said, DynaDot is still down.

They mention having to restore from backup - they're probably missing all the last few days of registrations.

alpha
3rd March 2009, 07:47 PM
..moniker is looking better by the min :)

yup. everything I have is at Moniker.

you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Domainsite, Dynadot.. they're all the same - they are cheaper for a reason

jose
3rd March 2009, 08:04 PM
Some are calling them the next RegisterFly...

Even Dreamhost has better backups. Using RAID 1 they would not have had this issue.

My new (probable - haven't choosed yet) host has 2 hours backups!

Even their mail is on the main server...

BTW: Will ICANN give them some warnigs? How does it work?

Man, if ICANN gives them a warning over this I would love to submit an excel spreadsheet worth of snapname registrars that need more than simply a warning!

Asiaplay
4th March 2009, 04:16 AM
Hopefully this is a wake-up for them... and they make sure that a hardware failure doesn't take them down again i.e. mirror their server...

They really do need to explain the steps they are taking to ensure the millions of dollars of domains (hate to estimate value) is protected and accessable 24/7/365...

I recently moved all my domains to Dynadot (as got so annoyed with the Go Daddy)... but without an explanation of what they plan to do to ensure this 3 day mess doesn't occur again, I will be looking at moving them all again.

Cheers - Asiaplay

PS: lets see what they come out with as an explanation (as otherwise up until now I have been very happy with them)!
Interestingly enough, I have not received any e-mail on this from them yet (guess they are going out in batches!!!).

Near 200 recently transferred domains of mine were missing following the outage. Sent them an email yesterday about the issue. Today all the domains are back.

None of mine were too close to expiration though. It may take them a while to get to all the problems. Hopefully they will.

Drewbert
5th March 2009, 02:31 AM
I was very lucky in this instance.

Because I'm away from mission control for this week, I did all my renewals, etc at Dynadot prior to leaving so didn't get hit by doing things within or just prior to the "lost days".

Well, I'm pretty sure that's the case. I can't really tell for sure until I get back.

They will trust your word on it? Take for instance transfer, if there's no money involved and records are missing...

Anyway instead of dynadotstatus.com they went for dynadot.info :)

So the outward facing webserver _AND_ the database server went down to a hardware failure??? That implies that they were on the same machine!

No problem for joe average website but really, incredibly, horribly bad strategy for a registrar! I've been splitting my domains between dynadot and moniker, but my confidence has truly been shaken. Paying a little bit more doesn't really sound so bad...

No matter how cheap Godaddy are, I just cannot stand their new interface/control panel. Half the time I cannot even access my control panel - I get a PAGE NOT FOUND message. I dont know what made them decide to have a page that has 18 million pieces of javascript and other BS that does nothing but to bloat the page and screw things up.

I have a few hundred domains at Godaddy ( 99.9% Ascii ) that I am going to start transfering over to Dynadot.

The only disappointing thing for me with this Dynadot episode was their lack of communication. Luckily for me, I was away from my pc the entire time the crash happened, so was not affected at all by it.

I just cannot bring myself to have what I consider professional valuable domain names at a registrar that sounds like it was named after some porn movie

Why do you think prices are so low?

That's their business model: less used to domaining users pay half the other user's fees, subscribing for useless stuff.

I had to renew a few names I bought last week....godaddy wanted $11.99 per renewal!!!!
I found a coupon and got them for $7.99...then got tortured on the never ending checkout process.
They really need a "get me the f*ck out of spamland and let me check the hell out" button.
I was clicking thru fast but if not mistaken I think they were even selling turkeys dinners in MRE packs. :p
