Domain domain aftermarket Sedo has completed the sale of gartenmöbel.de & gartenmoebel.de for EUR 100,000 (about $135,000 USD). The word means “garden furniture” in German.

Good times... thanks for the link Alpha

Which idn.cctld is next in line for high-profile 6 digit transactions? That's a real question.

When did German IDNs take off atcually?

Seems it already had when I entered the game in 2006.

idn.es

Yeah, that's probably a good bet Jose. Are there any reports of decent sales to date? I recall reading of some but can't find the source.

Not sure. I did a whois of gartenmöbel.de but creation date isn't shown. How do you see date of registration?

Way way back. Probably right from the off in 2001.

I agree with 2001 as well.

The more important question is WHY?

Why have IDN taken off so well in .de and not other extn's (so far) ?

Probably because the Germans are better educated.

My guess is because of high % of FF use and established domaining culture.

China is not far behind imo.

Problem with idn.jp from a resales standpoint is that many names at japanese registrars list the registrar's contact details, down to a catch-all email address. I'll bet e-mails are never routed properly to their owners.

Did IDN.de REALLY take off, i.e., people use them as frequently as they do ascii.de, or even half or 1/5 frequently?

I know the market for IDN.de took off, but the market and use are not altogether the same thing.

I remember asking my German friends about a year ago if they knew IDNs and their answers were "Nein".

1. There's no IDN stigma. IDN are domains. Point.
2. ö, just like spanish ñ or portuguese õ, ã or ç sound really different from o.
3. And yes, Germans are better educated.

1. There's no IDN stigma.

Do you mind telling us what the base is of your argument that Germans have no IDN stigma? Do you have any stats that show how vastly IDN.de is used (not registered) in comparison to ascii.de?

I was talking about German domainers, not German web developers.

Well, if the Chinese are saying that they don't want to trade in dollars, it isn't going to be long before the Stigma of avoiding writing Chinese wears off!
