Welcome to IDNF.

Russian:
http://wordstat.yandex.ru/

Chinese:
http://index.baidu.com/

google tools (Set location):
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal https://adwords.google.com/select/TrafficEstimatorSandbox

You should only use these as a vague indication.
IDNTools.com has many additional helpful tools and information.

Welcome Juno,

I use a few methods:

1. Google Adword Keyword Tool https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal (just set the language)

2. IDNTools Bulk Search Engine Results http://idntools.com/bulktools/bulkSE3.php

3. IDNTools Traffic Score http://idntools.com/

BTW: As full disclosure, I part own IDNTools, and we are always building tools so that we can better value IDNs.

Hi and welcome to IDNForums.

You can use the Google Keyword Tool - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal - to get an idea of the number of monthly searches for various keywords. Overture used to be a decent tool for getting some idea of traffic but that service stopped a few years back now.

hello and welcome to IDNF...

Many IDNer's and domainers are experts on traffic...
and search / SEO/ SERP.

But domain investing is art + science....(grin)....

Important words, expressions, or geographical adjectives can be valuable
even if not searched highly.

So in Japanese, it is important to consult with a native speaker.
Kanji or Katakana substitutions may be important.

As you search the archives and sales threads here, you will find patterns common for each language.

But PPC for income as the highest weighted strategy for monetization and valuation is one strategy among many....

Having a strong vertical or subject matter portfolio is common...
either in 1 language or across several.

rgds,

Steve

What are general thoughts on IDN.com Vs. IDN.IDN? is it worth investing in IDN.com's now or are CCTLD's still most preferred? For example would одеждызимы.com (Winter clothes in Russian) be a worthwhile investment..

No, because that is not a good translation of winter clothes.

[QUOTE=Juno;145190]What are general thoughts on IDN.com Vs. IDN.IDN? QUOTE]

IDN.com is going to become IDN.IDN with aliasing. That will happen "about" the same time that idn.cctld (ie idn.jp etc) become IDN.IDN.

A better question is IDN.gtld vs. IDN.cctld (assuming all are idn.idn) and for that you will get many opinions. :) The answer IMO is both will be terrific investments over the long haul.

Welcome and good luck with IDNing...

PS- Languages are tricky, especially Russian, Arabic, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Greek, Hebrew, Bengali, Hindi and English. :p

One more bit of advice about Google Adword Keyword Tool (something that I didn't learn until much too late): Once it shows you some numbers, set the "Match type" to "Exact" (the default is "Broad"). This tells you how many people entered exactly that search term.
