Chinese Domain Names Snubbed in Jinan
In contrast to the recent nationwide craze of registering internet domains with extensions in Chinese characters meaning "China," major enterprises and organizations in Jinan, capital of eastern Shandong Province, have been blamed by local media for lagging far behind the rest of the country.
The local newspaper Jinan Daily reported on Saturday that many Chinese-script domain names featuring the city's largest enterprise or famous scenic spots have been registered by some irrelevant individuals or firms other than the owners themselves.
The Chinese internet address of Baotu Spring, one of the three most famous local tourist attractions, for example, has been registered by a cyber-firm in southern China's Xiamen city, according to the report.
Some experts in the internet industry said a lack of awareness in protecting intangible assets and the possible technical obstacles brought about by current browsers and search engines may lead to the unpopularity of the registration in the city.
They also have warned that Chinese domain-name owners could face a complicated arbitration process and high costs to regain their internet addresses that others have registered.
Currently, enterprises or individuals can register the domain name ".zhongguo" via authorized agencies by paying 300 yuan (about 44 U.S. dollars) each, according to the report.
