The registry of .LU has announced the launch of Internationalized Domain
Names (IDNs) as of February 1, 2010.

There will be a Sunrise period between February 1, 2010 and March 31, 2010.
During this period only owners of already registered ASCII .LU names will
be able to get the respective IDNs. Thus, this Sunrise period is rather a
Grandfathering process.

Beginning April 1, 2010 IDN registrations will be performed on a "first-come,
first-served" basis.

As a second change under .LU, the registry will remove the local presence
requirement. As of February 1, 2010 domain name holders residing outside
Luxembourg are no longer obliged to give valid power of attorney to an agency
established in Luxembourg for the registration and the management of .LU
domains.
Thus, the trustee solution currently provided by domaindiscount24 is no longer
necessary when registering .LU domain names.

Luxembourg, February 1st, 2010 – EuroDNS is proud to announce the opening of the .LU Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) Sunrise period, starting today until March 31st.

The sunrise is open to all registrants who already own a .LU domain name. The IDNs give companies and individuals based in the European Union the chance to register domain names that contain non-Latin characters under the .LU domain.

As of today, domain name holders established outside Luxembourg do not longer need to give valid power of attorney to an agent established in Luxembourg for the registration and the management of their domain names.

Xavier Buck, CEO of EuroDNS explains, “2010 is truly the year of the IDNs and we are proud to be part the .LU IDN Sunrise period. In order to secure your domain name, it is important you register it today. As Luxembourg has 3 main languages, Luxembourgish, French and German, this is a great opportunity. Don’t miss this chance to have your .LU written in your own language and alphabet. Besides the removal of the local presence will make registrations easier and open the .LU space to all”.

There are a number of restrictions in registering a .LU IDN. The domain names eligible during the sunrise period are those derived from an existing domain name by replacing one or more characters with the same base character with a diacritic, or by applying the general replacement convention (ie: ü=ue). Besides, .LU IDN can only be registered during the Sunrise by the same holder of the similar .LU domain name.

The opening of the .LU IDN follows the recent launch of .PL, .EU, .DE, .COM and .NET IDNs.
