If you don't mind me asking, what's your background and how did you get into IDNs?

Yes, it is refreshing to get new perspectives rather than just our old stale rehashed ones. So, to all IDN noobs lurking; step up and say hello. :) Welcome to the forums Amy!

You're a bit late but still early and smart compared to millions of people risking big money in 'investments' expecting 10% return but ending in 50% plus loss. Although the best and most valuable has been exploited, there are still a lot left in this goldrush, welcome.

I was looking around tonight and came across your name on a couple of Georgian IDNs. Looks like you were active with IDN in 2007. I thought you just now peeked under the rock.:D How many Georgians do you have?

conspiracy theories are entertaining, but most of the time it is simply plain ignorance or incompetence.

i really don' know why the dates on those domains are so much older than when i actually got them.

now that you pointed it out to me, i just hope no bad things were associated with those sites when they weren't actually registered to me.

no! no! no!

i am saying i am ignorant and don't know anything intelligent about how these things work and thus cannot offer you an explanation why the dates on the domains are so much older than when i got them.

i did not register anything until last year.

Apologies, Amy. My mistake. Anyone else have a date problem with "whois" in Dynadot? Maybe I am ignorant, but I thought the creation date starts when the domain is first registered and starts over upon new registration. Or does it retain the creation date even if it's been dropped before and re-renewed by a new registrant? :o

I think I see what's going on. Some registrars, including Dynadot, allow you to purchase domains that are expiring, before they are dropped. Apparently the purchase is treated as a transfer rather than as a fresh registration, so the original creation date is kept.

But that's based on a limited set of observations. Does anyone have a more solid understanding?

thanks for the information.

i wonder if there is a subtlety in the usage of "register" that i was not aware of.

maybe one should say "register a domain" only when the domain is not owned by someone else at the time of the transaction, i.e. the domain has been dropped or has never been registered?

how would one phrase it then, when one, for example, bought it from another person or an agent? "i bought a domain"?

had i said "i don't know why the dates are older than when i bought the domains", could i have avoided confusing others?
