Russia since the beginning of priority registration has already booked 6.8 thousand names

According to Kolesnikov, of the total number of registered domains 7% (453) - are reserved for the needs of the state, 93% (6,6 thousand) - trademark owners. Most requests came from Moscow (53%) and the Moscow region (13%), followed by St. Petersburg (7%), Sverdlovsk region (2%).

I found this interesting although the math doesn't make sense. So maybe a native speaker can clarify.

The names of several words separated by hyphens, up 17 percent of all domain names of several words, written together - 13 per cent, and the names of simple words - 12 percent. 51 percent accounted for the remaining species name brands.

товарных знаков из нескольких слов, разделенных дефисом, составляют 17 процентов всех доменов, названия из нескольких слов, написанных слитно - 13 процентов, а названия из простых слов - 12 процентов. 51 процент приходится на остальные виды названий брендов

Maybe it's just google translate. Are they saying 17 % of the registered multiple word domains are hyphenated and 13% are not? Or is that of the total domains registered?

What it means is that out of the 93% that was registered by someone other then gov't officials which registered 7% of the total so far.
17% from all domains are from multiple words hyphenated. 13% are non hyphenated. Hyphenated domains make a lot of sense in Russian language as it is the proper grammatical way to express the written. For example "rock musik", One way to right it is "рок музыка", but the proper grammatical way to write it is " рок-музыка", so no surprise there. It may be more common in English to write it with no hyphens, but Russians are very strict with grammar.

Thanks, I realize hyphens make sense in Russian. It looks like the % is pretty close right now. It'll be interesting how the current difference +/- 4% will evolve once open registration begins.

12 percent - The names of simple words. (I'm assuming this means generic dictionary words.)

51 percent - accounted for the remaining species name brands. (And this means true corporation names.)

7000 trademarks ;p

Not if 12% of those names are generics. ;) Someone is getting a jump on great generic terms.

I thought it was only for gov't purposes and trademarks? how can they register dictionary words? I thought that the company that registered sex.rf and porno.rf under the trademarks lost all privileges to obtain these domains under the new law that came out 2 hours after the company went public on national tv to show everyone how smart they are. Hellooo did they forget what country they live in?

Blast posted this thread a few weeks ago. Basically, they are going to let the registrations stand as they are.

http://www.idnforums.com/forums/24317-russia-to-resume-priority-cyrillic-domain-registration-soon.html

But this sure doesn't look like a trademark to me. https://www.nic.ru/whois/?domain=xn--80aa8ab.xn--p1ai But then I don't know my way around the "Russian Trademark" system.

In fact they don't even own the equivalent; mama.ru. Looks like mama.ru is still promoting Мама.ру in the search. Maybe they didn't get the memo?

I note that the .рф first-come-first-served registrations start right smack in the middle of the ICANN Narobi conference in March.

I skipped through some parts I considered unimportant, so here is a brief summary:

1. Registration is on track. April 20th is the first day anyone could register their .rf domain without having a TM through the Dutch auction.

2. The demand for .rf domains is shaping up to be very significant. Cyrillic domains are very valuable because of marketing, SEO, ROE and demographic potential. Generic premium Cyrillic domains will be extremely valuable because of the traffic and loyalty and their potential to generate a significant amount of revenues. Idnforum members couldn’t have said it better:-) Hence, the Dutch auction.

3. 10 million ruble mark is not a done deal. They expect it to be, but there is a talk about lowering it to 1 million. In order to make a decision and assess the demand, pre-registration is open right now. That means people without TMs don’t need to wait until April 20th and could apply for their .rf domains by filling out a pre-registration form/sending them an email. Whoever does it first, will get their domain for the set price (10 million rubles or whatever they decide, but it won’t be cheap because of point #2). I personally think they are opening that pre-registration right now to justify 10 million price tag they will stick to later on.

It's becoming obvious to me which domains they are interested in. ;)

Thanks for taking the time for watching this one Explorer, I realize it was a long (2-part) video, but this is very good info indeed.

BTW, is anyone watching "Digital Revolution" on BBC? I don't get BBC channel. I would love to see the series. It's about Icann and how the web has/is evolving. Info here. (http://www.nma.co.uk/news/bbc-launches-mash-up-promotion-for-virtual-revolution-series/3009366.article)

It seems you have to sign up for an account to watch online. Digital Revolution (http://www.nma.co.uk/news/bbc-internet-doc-lives-up-to-the-spirit-of-open-source-with-free-footage-offer/3003783.article?sm=3003783).

If you have links/videos post them.

Thanks.

So basically, they are "testing the waters" right now and will price the domain auction accordingly. If a thousand people try to pre-reg the same domain then their prices will inflate/deflate according to the numbers.

Is that a fair assessment?

I like the part where they talk about the .ru domains being reged by squatters in the early days who are selling them today to the Russian market at high prices and how the .rf is the solution to sybersquatting and in reality they are doing the same thing and making Sh*tload of money from it.

Yes, that's my thinking. If they get a lot of applicants for generic domains, they might decide to stick to their original 10 million price tag and we'll have a bunch of $300K+ IDN sales on April 20th.

But make no mistake - the demand is clearly significant. Heck, rainbow.rf got 5 applicants during the sunrise period.

That was indeed funny.

The whole speech was very pro-rf. They were pretty much hinting that .rf will overtake .ru in the future.

Exciting times for sure. 5 applicants for rainbow; was that in the video? Think of how many applications they must have for all the top terms? I'm predicting they'll start at 300k.

.рф and Icann seem to be on a collision course at the Nairobi meeting. Icann has all but called out Russia in their last blog post and Russia is only speeding up. Can't wait to see what's in store.

Nice! You need to share more often. ;)

I figured. The dates are dependent on IANA. Looks like they'll hold the auction as soon as they are in the root.

Now the speed of implementation of its work depends primarily on the speed of decision-making in international organizations IANA.

Looks like a many people are upset that the Russian Administration and domainers got their names and trademark holders haven't.
